DIY: Raceramps (Rhino Ramps) Vs Hydro Jack w/ Jack Stands

Just curious what everyone prefers to use and why. I plan on doing my exhaust install soon and was looking to invest in one or the other.

Honestly I think the only thing I would ever do is the exhaust swap, and oil change. Other than that, i dont think I really have the technical know how to install things like rotors, or other brake kits, or do I have the experience to install springs and shocks which i plan on doing soon as well

If you can swap exhaust and do oil you can do most other things. Don't limit yourself. I have blown back and I still am able to do most things just takes little time and pain. But right tools, good manuals and forums is all U need to Shade Tree.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I think I am just in that phase of "its brand new and i dont wanna ruin anything" hehe. Im sure once I put the first mod on it the adrenaline will kick in for me to do the rest. So looks like you guys have me sold, now time to find a good set of stands and a jack .

Recommendations are appreciated

I can't vote in this poll, as I use either/or/both dependent on the task at hand. "The right tool for the job."

If I could have only one however it would be a quality low profile jack and jackstands.

jacks and jackstands. ramps are great but will limit what you can do.

I do oil changes and stuff on ramps..the Raceramps work great...even on my lowered car..

Everything else you need the car on jackstands.....

So if you are going to get only one..the jack and stands are the way to go

I guess stands are the way to go, mainly because I am motivated to do a suspension install. But I guess now the question is, Will I be able to do a suspension install with just 2 stands and a jack, or do I need to get a solid set of 4 stands?

You will be doing both sides of the Front or Rear at the same time. You could get four if you wanted but it isn't necessary.

Ramps are easier, but obviously you cannot do anything that involves taking the wheel off, which includes changing the spark plugs. So if you are only getting one go with the Jack and stands. My advice - dont go cheap. Saving a few bucks on somthing that is holding 3000 lbs from falling on your head is not a good idea.

I have a craftsman that was about $75 for the jack and 2 stands. But I am planning on purchasing this one soon - Harbor Freigth Almuinum Racing Jack

Honestly ramps are handy but completely unnecessary. You will do fine with a good floor jack and a couple of stands. If you need to get the car off the ground a bit first, just put some chunks of 2x4 in front of the tires and drive up on them. Then jack away.

Oil changes should be done with a floor jack because you'll be able to drain the engine better... maybe even by 1 quart (at least on a SII, where the drain hole is on the front of the pan).

^ but if you have a Fumoto oil pan valve you don't even need to jack it (Series I).

I use a Large-ish Hydro Floor Jack, jack car up in front X member middle, put 2 stands at factory jack areas, lower, go to rear , jack up on diff, pace two rear jack stands at factory jack position..

Like this one..in red..
http://www.harborfreight.com/3000-lb...ack-91039.html

Takes about 5 mins...

I can remove ALL Wheels, Drain Diff and or Trans and or Engine and or Oil Filter, Brakes, Rotation, ETC...

I use my 4 modded jack stands that have the same adapter design that the OEM's car Jack has on it welded to top of each of my jack stands.

Just wanted to followup on this thread incase anyone else is trying to make the decision as well. I went and actually got the floorjack, actually got the same one as ASH8 since there was a harbor freight down the street. In the past few weeks I have already used it to install coilovers and oilchanges. These are things i would generally have trouble doing if I had the ramps considering the car is a bit lower now.

I have that jack and it won't work like ASH8 says since my car is so low. I have the Race Ramps Trak Jax (I think that is what they are called) just to get my car high enough to put the jack under it lol. Yea what Rev posted it basically the same thing. http://www.raceramps.com/trakjax.html There are coupon codes on a few different forums that take off 10-15% maybe more if you search.

Those are pretty cool, but it is so much cheaper to diy with some 2x4's. Thats what I need to do in the front since my jack wont fit all teh way since I am so low heh.

Hi,

Sorry I should have said, I have to first put two blocks of wood at front tyres and drive on them, To then increase the Engine X Member to floor gap so that Floor Jack will fit and you can "pump it up"..

The rear Diff, for Me works fine without any Tyre raisers..Just...

Those race ramps look a good idea also..
