Anyone think squealing breaks would be covered by the factory warranty? Although they don't squeal all of the time, it is extremely annoying and embarrasing when it does occur. I just want it fixed.

 

I believe eclps0 on this forum went through the exact same thing. His warranty claim was denied on the grounds that abuse caused the rotors to glaze over, causing the squealing. maybe he could chime in here.

yeah they denied my warrenty calim on my brakes. Which pisses me off so know i have to shell out like 500.00 on new rotors. I am not getting stock rotors i might get power stop or brembo.

I bitched at my dealer but did not do much. They said i abused the car that is why i warped my rotors. Well yes i drive fast yes i take turns, but still i have never done a road course. i have done 1/4 and autocross. I think i warped my rotors when i was going 80 and some lady cut in front me and slammed on her brakes. So i mashed my brake pedel( Damm this thing stops when u want 2)

 

Not what I want to hear. I haven't done anything that should have caused damage. I drive in the city and there is a lot of stop and go...but a 30 K should be able to withstand such conditions.

 

If it's only glazing, the dealership should be able to refinish the rotors (several times) before the rotors need to be replaced. If they're warped though, you might be SOL.

I do think it's a warranty-worthy item, as long as the mileage is pretty low on the vehicle.

 

They said even if they cut them it will come back in a month or so. im not going to pay 100.00 + to get my rotors cut and it come back on me. Sorry i dont like wasting money. I will bitch at my dealr more or take it somewhere else to get the rotors warrentied.

 

How many miles do you have on your car ?

Have you tried going to Mazda USA directly or talk to the service manager ?

I would think you would have to have quite a few high speed stops over and over again in order to warp the rotors which I doubt you did . . .

 

Might just be debris. 30K might be the pads. the pads are design to squeal when it is time to change them.

 

I would take the car up to about 60mph and then jam on your brakes HARD !!!

Just make sure no one is behind you when you do this and there is a good possibility this will stop the squeaking since this will get rid of the particles of dirt that might be cause the squeaking.

 

as of today i have 14,000 + miles on the car. I was complaining to the dealer at around 5,000 miles and they said its fine. Well as soon as i pass 12,000 miles they say its my rotors. Its documented so i try to talk to mazda usa and get it fixed.

 

Sorry...I should have specified. I meant $30,000 car not 30,000 miles. My car has just a tad over 10,000 miles.

 

I havetaken my car to 2 differentdealers and complained about the brakes and noneof them have ever done jack about it. One of the service representativesmade up some bullshit andtold me that the the Rx8 brake rotors tend to getmore rust on themthan other cars so thatis what could be causingmine to squeal at randomtimes. Im at 7500 miles. I reallywould like this problemcorrected one day.

Ohand I noticed something elsethat may be a factor. You guys both live in areas w/humid climates like me.

My brakes squeal, too. They started squealing around 5000 miles and haven't stopped since. Oh, once and a while they're quiet, but not usually.

I'm scheduled to take my car in Wednesday for the recalls and 10000 mile service. I'm going to mention the brakes to them and will let you guys know what happens....

 

I'm sorry if you thought i was agreeing with your dealer. Your dealer should try to resurface the rotors and DO IT UNDER WARRANTY.


slightly OT- I had a wobble/squeal in the front end of my 98 honda, and it was the rotors. They were resurfaced, and were fine until it was time for an actual brake job around 60K miles. Sounds like the dealer was just yanking your chain to not have to do the repair. Try to at least force them to resurface the rotors on their dime.

 

I might print out this thread and take it in to the dealer to show them that others are having the same problems. We'll see what happens

 

I know a perfect way to temporarily remove the squealing(probably, if not definetly, temporarily). If you think about this it makes sense.
Get your car in a safe area with no cars; now, simply put it in reverse, accelerate, and brake HARD several times in a small area(my dad did this in our porch.). It should remove the squealing. don't believe me? try it. (hey, I might be 14, but my father taught me this, and I was in the car when he did it.)

 

A bit of squealing now and then is normal, especially for high performance brakes. Squealing is uncommon in most American cars because the Americans use softer pads that are less likely to squeal. Unfortunately, this also means cars with these nice quiet brakes have longer stopping distances than the high friction pads used in the 8.

 

What I'm referring to (and I'm sure most of us) is not "a bit of sqealing now and then." It's more "a bit of quiet now and then." My brakes squeal most of the time.

They seem to work fine and I don't notice a problem with stopping or any strange vibrations, but I'm going to have them look at it anyway just in case. And it is embarrassing.

 

Mine have been squeling like a pig for a while. Just over 10000 miles.

 

My rear left brakes squeaks when light pressure is applied. My dealer tech took it apart and cleaned the contact areas between the calipurs and pads, and it still squeaked. I might try a few rounds of hard braking from high speed as someone here suggested.

I've also tried Squeal Medic by Gunk. It seems to be metal particles in suspension (looks like silver paint), you spray it directly on the rotors, not supposed to affect braking power. It stopped the squeak entirely, but only lasted a couple of days, but ymmv, so it might be worth a try. About 8 bucks at Pep Boys for a little can.

 

I have the same problem - squeling brakes - and my dealer could not find anything wrong. Was anyone able to get it fixed?

 

Here's my 2cents...
My '8s brakes don't normally squeal (though I did hear it once or twice when the car was really new), but I've had cars in the past with squeeky brakes.

The problem is generally caused by vibration of the pad against the rotor and caliper. To solve the problem I generally replaced the shims behind the pads, and used the anti-squeal goop that comes with the shims (or you can buy it separately). In addition, making sure the rotors aren't glazed is a good idea too. There are various methods of getting rid of the glaze like having the rotors turned (pretty cheap if you take them to your local Pep Boys), or I've seen people (friends) use a sanding wheel on the end of a drill or Dremel to rub the surface of the rotor. I suppose that this is what the "Hard stop in reverse" idea does too. In this case, you're getting the pads to rub backward on the rotor which will scuff it up more than rubbing forward. Think of the pad like shark skin. Rub it one way it's all smooth. Rub it the other and it feels a bit like fine sandpaper.

Either way, I'm of the belief that squeeky brakes shouldn't be covered by the warranty. A brake failure, yes... Glazed rotors no(since it's a byproduct of hard/improper usage than a defective part).

If your rotors are warped, you're hosed. Buy some new ones and be nice to your brakes. Remember what causes warped rotors. A quick heat up with a quick cool down. If you really heat them up, cool them down gradually, don't just park it. I have heard of cars with poor rotor design in the past... Not enough mass to sustain temp so they're more prone to warping, but I'm not sure that's the case with the '8. In about 6000 miles of spirited driving I've yet to see any problems with my brakes, but we all have different driving styles.

Speedsource is using stock brakes in the Grand Am series only replacing the pads, brake lines (with steel braided), and brake fluid. Our rotors are good enough for race applications, I think we're pretty safe from warping.

 

I'd advise against this....
