tail light issues

So a few weeks ago and possibly the reason for what is going on. I had unplugged both tail lights so that I could seal them better since they loved to accumulate water. Solved the problems but yesterday coming home late, a biker pulled next to me and told me my tail lights werent working but the brake lights did come on. I pulled next to a business with a large window to test my lights.

Turn signals came on, brake lights came on and reverse lights came on but the lights werent on for regular night driving. I checked both tail lights wondering if i forgot to connect the black wires together (not sure what their purpose is) but they were both connected, Everything appeared to be connected. Could it be a fuse issue? I find it weird that both arent working instead of just one.

You should have the amber lights for the brake lights even if the little LED in the two stakes are out. Does your license plate light up? Check again if you snapped it in position or look for frayed wires.

I will check tomorrow to see if my license plate lights up. Didnt think to look at that. Absolutely no lights stay lit up at night in the tail light though unless i use a turn signal or hit the brake or put it in reverse. I know each tail light has the three bulb connections but also has the black wire that you have to disconnect because the other half is fixated to the tail light. What is that wire for? I checked the connections however and they appear perfectly fine. I am going to do some research now on fuses since I know there are fuses inside the car and also under the hood. I would think its a fuse considering neither side works. Thanks for replying.

The black wire is for the lights on the horizontal strakes. At least if you have them connected those lights should work if you have your running lights on. Now for the other bulbs, there are two filaments in the brake light bulb and only one for the signal light. Do you think you had those wires connected to the wrong bulb or the bulbs are installed in the wrong chamber? That's all I could think of besides a blown fuse.

Not sure where my lat post went so i will try again. I found that there were two fuses which I thought there was only one. Checked the smaller fuse and it was blown so I put another in and tried the lights. Nothing so I checked the fuse again and it was blown so I went to check the wires wondering if I had the wires wrong but they looked fine. I saw the black wire for the driver side had no slack and seemed caught uo on something. The passenger side had lots of slack. I took the driver side tail light housing off and there was the problem. The wire was pinched so bad that bare wire was touching the body. I electrical taped it and positioned it better. Tried another fuse and now they work. Thanks for taking time to try and help out.

Was that wire had any effect on the license plate light turning on or not?
