Unhappy RX8 Evolve

Hi,

I'm a bit of a rookie here.

I got my first Mazda RX8 about a month and a half ago.

Does anyone know of any issues that I may need to look out for.

I'm finding the rear wheel plates (if that's what they're called) rusting and I'm getting a squeak when turning the steering wheel.

I showed the dealer the rear plates and he said the only way we get round these is painting them - but will cost which is poor, especially for a car 1 1/2 years old and under warranty, my neighbor has the same problem.

Cheers

Lee

There is a wealth of information on this forum. Best way to learn about this car is to read some of the threads--especially in the Tech sections.

The rotors do rust and some dealers will paint them and some will not. It is a cosmetic thing, admittedly an ugly thing, but it is not a mechanical problem. Why not take a few hours one weekend and paint them yourself. I think there is a DIY on that in the DIY section. Here's what they look like with a good coat of high-temp G2 brake caliper paint on them.

If you do paint them, make sure you get rid of all the rust. Preparation is the key to a lasting paint job.

Welcome! Check your oil every couple of weeks and refill as necessary. This car injects oil into the combustion chamber so don't be alarmed if you're using oil, that's good, just make sure you keep it topped off as necessary.

If you're car is used, change the oil and other fluids and take it to a dealer and make sure you have the latest flash and other recalls done.

Red line it at least once a day to help keep the engine clean of carbon build-up. Take a look at the premix thread and consider premixing to keep your apex seals better lubed and maybe add a little bit of the right kind of cleaner. Some find it easy to use 4 oz of MMO. Others add something like 3 oz of Idemitsu prelube and 1+ oz of FP+ at every fill-up.

Use summer high performance tires and snow tires in winter if you have snow in your area. It's a mortal sin to put all-season tires on this kind of car.

Have tons of fun!
