Rattle, 1,500 to 2,800 RPM, All Gears

Read the thousand or so posts I found on transmissions... Found one mention in about 2008 with no follow up...

So, Car is 2004 GT, 6 spd, 118,000 miles. Clutch is about a year old (Exedy Stage 1, will never do Stage 1 again). ACT light flywheel. Redline MT-90. New pilot and release bearing, greased both.

I have no shifting problems, just got back from track and all was good.

Flywheel and Clutch were replaced after a catastrophic release bearing failure (parts everywhere).

Issue is a rattling noise in every gear, between about 1,500 and 2,800 RPM. Feels like a vibration, but shifter is not really shaking. Sounds and feels like coming from engine, but cannot be sure. I initially thought it was the sound of a light flywheel, but am becoming less and less sure.

Moving along, in any gear, sound persists until clutch is pressed far enough the fully release, then goes away. Sound also exists while coasting in gear in that RPM range. It is almost like you can hear or feel each ignition firing.

Other than the stated RPM range, it is a Zoom-Zoom, passed a 911 and BMW this past weekend at the track.

Will the CAT behave this way?
Trans Input Shaft Bearing?

I'm thinking flywheel chatter...?

I get some between 1.5k-3k RPM that is noticeable in all gears, although I wouldn't describe the sound as a rattle.

Definitely post a audio/video clip.

Cannot get the phone to pick up the noise.

@ Brettus, damn, I was hoping not to hear that. I ordered a few really long hose clamps to go on an exhaust rattle hunt, but they are not in yet.

Here is the next question, what in the clutch is making the noise? Only does it in gear. Out of is quite as can be, only appears to make noise under load.

I think it's the springs rattleing . I don't mind it too much because it's not often I'm labouring the engine like that anyway .

Ditto now on the springs... Team drove all the way from Texas to listen. Then I shook the springs on my old clutch, almost the exact same noise. We came to the same conclusion. If the fix was not such a pita, and if my old pressure plate was not carved up, I would go back....

Thanks,

I take it that is good.

Thanks again for the second opinion. Safe Travels.

@ Brettus, thanks as well for your help in the global rattle hunt.

I've had a similar issue, sounds like it was coming from the issue, but turns out it was the heat shield for the CAT. There are multiple layers and one of the inner layers was rusted out. Used a air hose to blow out all the loose stuff and that *mostly* fixed it.

Ah,

That sounds like a good one too..

Although, the sound started when I installed the clutch.. But that process could have knocked something loose.
