plug and coil replacement cost

took my 8 to my buddies father-in-law's shop for a loss off power. he wants to charge me $700 to change plugs and ignition coils. its a 2004 so it falls out of warranty, but is this price outta control, normal, or am i better off takin it to the dealership?

hes chargin you the dealership price...

coils go for around 125$ shipped

plugs (4) go for about 80$ shipped

plugs - 25minutes max to do, about a 3 on n00bie scale from 1-10 to do

coils- 15 minutes max (depending on whether you have the stock airbox or not)

heres a DIY for the coils

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ight=diy+coils

search "diy spark plugs" to find the spark plug diy

I've never changed my coils while I had a stock air box, but I guess you could do it in about an hour - less if you've done it before. Then the spark plugs are pretty easy - maybe 30 minutes. So I guess you could do it for $205 if you have a jack, a driveway, and 2 hours to kill (some basic tools).

I just did mine today. I have stock airbox.
It took me about 90 min (although I wasnt really trying to go fast). I changed coils, plugs, wires and K&N air filter.
It is also very easy to clean your MAF sensor while your at it.
I bought the stuff at Mazdatrix, about 400 in parts total with tax.
I paid little premium so I could have it today. can save a few bucks by having shipped.
Made HUGE difference in how mine ran.

took me about an hour in the pouring down rain to do coils and plugs...and yes the hardest thing is taking that damn airbox out but I've done it so much that I'm a pro at it by now haha

Generally, if you make friends with a few car guys in an area, the cost of most maintenance items is about a 6 of beer per man required.

Thanks, Dozer, very much. The instructions could not be any simpler or more direct than you made them.

I am about to change my plugs, wires and coild also and am wondering if it matters which brand of wire and coils I use. Right now I am looking at the mazdatrix and the NGK wires. The NGK are the cheapest I have found, $23.87. It's an OEM set so I am just wondering if that will work well with the NGK Laser Irirdium spark plugs. You can check them out here:
http://www.massivespeedsystem.com/ng.../i-225237.aspx

Thanks.

I was about to change wires/plugs/coils as well. I think Racing Beat wires are pretty good but IDK many others.
