idle dipping

hey guys, got another problem with the car now -_-

the car is a 05 50k miles. i bought it used at 46k miles. only mods are pully kit, rev8 catback.

soo i was driving home about an hr ago and the car started to backfire when i would let off the gas in 6th gear going 70mph. when i exited the freeway and stopped at the light it stalled. i started it up again and the idle would pulse between 200-400rmps. idled and sounded like it was ported.

if i held it in first gear at 4k rpms it would stutter and backfire. when i got home it smelled like *** and the idle was pulsing between stall and maybe 300?

I have NO idea whats wrong with it. engine seemed a little hot for a 15 mile drive home.

I dont know if the plugs, coils, wires were changed yet.

It smells like i have no cat.

any help would be great.

oh and i went upstairs to look through the search then went down started the car and it was idling fine.

so any input would be helpful. thanks

Sounds like your cat went bye bye. Seems a little bit early for it, but things like that happen.

50K on the original cat... its a likely suspect.
You might have changed out the rear O2 sensor when it was perfectly fine and doing its job telling you there was something wrong with the cat.
Also, poor ignition can contribute to decreased cat life.
If you don't know when these were last changed out, you might want to consider it.

Possible bad ignition component that damaged your cat.

OEM Cat is expensive so you might as well go with a midpipe with hi flow cat maybe through BHR or Racing BEAT. I dont know if you have emmission testing at your location so a straight midpipe would fail you. If you dont than do with the suggestions above but a straight midpipe without a cat or resonator is obnoxious sounding.

unless you take it apart, you probably will have a tough time figuring out its bad. If you trust a Mazda mechanic, than have them take a look.

you must not have emmissions testing if you dont know. Some places require you to go once a year or every two years to get a smog check.

emission testing isnt done everywhere but usually major or large cities. It is for the city to make sure that your car is within the limit of how much Carbon Dioxide its emmiting into the air. Around here in Idaho, its only $12.00 every two years but I think it went up more. Not a big deal but w/o a CAT, you would fail the smog test and possibly lose your registation if you didnt fix the problem within a time frame. Also if you do decide to go midpipe, I recommend you find someone in here with a midpipe around your location to let you here it in person. I made the mistake of not learning about what kind of sound output a high flow CAT makes before I purchased one and ended up taking it off after a couple of weeks. I imagine that a midpipe would be even louder w/o a CAT.

so is the guage in your car showing high oil temperature? have you looked at your CAT for color change? and seen exactly where the hot air that you were speaking about was coming from?
