mass air flow sensor???????? Idling Problem!!!

Hey, Okay so I just bought my mazda rx8 so I am not familiar with its problems!

Its an 04 6 speed manual

My problem is that when I fire up the engine for a cold start, it will start with this loud noise and will rev at around 1 - 2 rpm. After the noise goes away, the rpm drops and just before it hits 0 it revs back up. It does this for a couple of times and will eventually turn off and stall. I then start the engine again and it will do the same thing. The rpm idles steady for a minute and then starts going up and down.

I took it for check up and was told that the mass air flow sensor needs to be changed...This problem is very annoying as it stalls whenever I come to a full stop from driving...I avoid stopping when I am driving it so it does not stall on me!

I keep hearing different things from different people and thought I post here to see if I am the only one with this problem. Has this ever happen to anyone? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

You can get MAF cleaner and try and clean it - also check your air filter - it maybe completely clogged - which can lead to similar symptoms.

I have cleaned the MAF, I also cleaned the air filter but the problem is still there. I have also noticed that the MAF and the air filter both had oil on them which makes me think that the oil is leaking somewhere and going into the intake.

Oil on the MAF? That's new to me - maybe it is wrecked out and needs replacing

Could be several things.

Oil in the intake (search for Oil in the intake). It can be an overfill of the oil, it makes a mess, will mess up the MAF)

Loud noise, air pump could be going. It is the round thing on the right side fender. Disconnect the reddish connector and start, see if the sound is still there. Do not leave it disconnected, just unplug for a test. Mine fell off last weekend, it was the darnedest thing. I think mazmart makes the plat that covers the intake.

If you have maintenance history, check for coils and plugs changed any time soon. If you have original coils they could be shot.

Vacuum leak will do that as well.

In my sig box are 2 links. One is about the car, the other is what I did for mine in the first year. I would suggest the first $100 stuff (specifically grounds), then coils, then plugs. I know plugs are cheaper than coils, but I am starting to think that the coils go first and foul the plugs. There are vendors on this site for plugs (mazmart) or some of the auto parts stores are now stocking them.

The Idle problem you described was what mine did when the ECU was reset and I had a vacuum leak. Make sure that the oil cap is on tight, that the 3 hoses going to the intake are connected and reset the ECU. It could be lost. One thing I did when mine behaved that way was start it, let it idle, and when it started to die, press the gas a little, to keep it running (say 1200 rpm). When it got to where it was smooth at that rpm, lower it a little. Basically the ECU has to learn how to idle. It is not going to fix what is wrong, but it may help make the car drivable.

Where are you located?

Sounds like the same problem I had with the Eccentric Shaft Sensor being dirty

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/p0335-eccentric-shaft-position-sensor-circuit-problem-car-will-not-idle-194505/

Try this first before doing anything else

Remember to do the 20 brake tap reset after.

You cannot accurately diagnose and repair a car over the internet. Sorry. In the end you will just run in circles and change a bunch of parts mostly for nothing.

Yes the air pump is the cause for that loud noise. Does that mean that my air pump is bad and needs to be replaced? or do all RX8s do that from a cold start?

The eccentric shaft sensor sits on the front of the engine at around the 4 o'clock position, taking it's reading from the toothed wheel you'll see there.

Did you actually clean the MAF, or just the hangy-down-uvula-looking thingy? The actual MAF is fine wires up inside the housing.......the brown bulb item is the IAT.

Lots of oil in the intake and filter is quite common, not from overfill, but from blow-by in hard driving. Had it in 2004.

Oil in the intake and filter is common?? I took it to the shop today and they told me without looking at it that the engine oil seals might be bad which means my engine is garbage and I might need a new engine. However, you saying that its common gives me hope again haha. What did you do to fix this? Because I am afraid that I will change the MAF and air filter and they will get soacked in oil again...

Like TeamRX8 suggested, diagnosing over the internet is very difficult, especially when the problem is something that can be caused by many faults.
Follow this checklist, and keep us informed:
-Clean MAF https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...71&postcount=9
-Eccentric Shaft Position sensor (^^post#12. Best way is to lift car and SUPPORT WITH JACK STANDS, crawl under) https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=194505. Don't forget the 20 Brake stomp after!

Oil in air intake tube is fairly common, as StealthTL said. Can also be caused by over-filling your oil. Use a funnel with at least a 5" neck when filling oil.

The erratic idle can be caused by the neutral switch on the transmission or the clutch switch (the top one)

Does it act differently in neutral vs. in gear?
Clutch in or out?

For oil in the intake get a catch can or re-route the breather tube as Mazda did in the TSB and on later models.

DarkBrew's picture has the oil fix - see the catch can that's been added? Just like the RX-7s needed.
After the '06 redesign, that flow of oily blowby goes to nozzles on the vacuum side of the throttle plate, not the air filter side.
Oil in the intake is not serious.

Mazda Rx8 2006.Idle problems. No fix. I have replaced throttle body. Gave it new spark plugs wires. New o2 sesor. Still getting idle problems there is no leaks. Now going to replace Map sensor. Nothing seems to be working. Car idles from 1-2 rpm and will die at stops and stalls. Help please. Engine Automatic.

Likely ignition coil failure, it's very common. Possibly engine failure as well.
Otherwise, replacing parts without diagnosing is an expensive way to know which parts weren't the problem. Hook up an OBD reader and get airflow and fuel trim data.

But first, ignition coils. Search the forum for more about this topic.
