Help diagnosing new noise

Got back today from trip and took RX for a run. Car drove great as usual (save for a little 1-2 shift difficulty). But, when I got home and let it idle for a second to perform a few checks, a new noise developed. It seems to happen only at idle, but I am not sure yet. It almost sounds like metal on metal, but it doesn't change with engine speed and isn't effected by clutch position. I lubricated some pullies, thinking it may be a bearing, but it didn't help.

I searched the forums, but couldn't find anything I thought was quite right.

Please listen to the attached video and see if you can provide suggestions.

(Had to upload to DB) - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/46069329/WP_...16_233855Z.mp4

Thanks in advance...

By the ear, it seems to be coming from the area of the intake manifold. Maybe an air leak or vacuum line?

Yes. The sound is not the best on the recording. It is very high pitched and constant. I did find another thread referencing a jet flow tube and will be checking that in the morning.

This is going to be one of "those" issues. Went out this morning, with diagrams in hand, and it is quiet. No high pitched whine. Grrr...

Does the sound change/stop once it warms up? To me it sounds like your air pump is done.

It is the opposite. After a couple of runs with cool down and warm up periods. The car is quiet when cool and the whine begins as the engine warms.

Also, there is no CEL and no performance impact. Maybe slightly worse mileage.

Could this come from over filling the oil? The marker is a little above the high point.

Nothing to do with the oil level...don't worry about it.

Could be an alternator or water pump bearing...idler bearing.... could be the air bypass from the pump to the exhaust...if it leaks you can get an exhaust whistle ( give the mushroom looking thing by the air pump a few swats and see if it goes away ). If it was a vac leak you should get a CEL fairly soon with that much of a leak...and a 0170 code for too lean

Little above high point is fine.

Just need to make sure if u have a vacuum leak, do a smoke test, or even better, do a brake cleaner test

Little more info after a couple more drives:

1) Noise rises in pitch before stopping when engine is shutoff (think squealing baloon).

2) Is definitely temperature related. Only happens after engine warms.

3) Tonight, it started to pulse in time with the rpms. Instead of a constant whine, it was a beep - beep - beep staccato in time with the firing of the engine.

4) It is definitely under the intake manifold.

Looks like I may have to pull the manifold to find the offending line.

After some more digging it looks like the only loose connection I can find is the purge valve on the UIM. Does anyone have a picture I can compare with? The top of the connector is about 1/2 inch from the UIM. It looks like it has slid down, but it doesn't really wiggle. Before I work on getting in there, I would like to see if if fits snuggly against the UIM.

Anyone know where to source the gaskets from, other than the dealer. I am unable to find them thus far.
