Gas Pedal loose

Hey, my gas pedal has some play. About 1/8 an inch. Is there a way to tighten it?

Yeah, when i push in the gas pedal it has about 1/8in dead spot befor it finally engages and gives the vehicle fuel. I can pretty much put my foot on it and push it in 1/8in and nothing will happen. Once i push it in a little further, it will finally rev the car.

everything has free play. you dont want the pedal to be spot on.

Seriously this is normal? All the cars I have owned before reacts instantly when my foot 'touchs' the pedal, and I am so used to that. It is easier for my foot to sense the 'touch' then the 1/8in on-off spot, especially if I change to different shoes. I always have to relearn the rx8 driving after I drive my Protege5 for a few days...This is actually quite crucial to smoothly go from cruise to acceleration as there is always some guess work when I have to remember where that on-off spot is.

Not a big deal though, I was just surprised that the car is designed this way.

The Protege isn't drive by wire.

True and the rx8 is the first drive by wire car I have driven. Still the play is just not necessary.

On the other side, the Protege5 is getting old and sometimes the pedal gets a little sticky and does not return to the top most, and I would idle a bit high until I pull the pedal back with my feet. Doesn't really bother me, I just need to WD40 it.

u know why it's necessary?

cuz sensors are much, I mean MUCH more sensitive than ANY old school thru cable throttle. so if the pedal itself is stiff and "stuck a bit", the car will just fly on it's own. the free play is there to prevent accidents

well, I'm not sure about your Protegee but my RX-7 has a bit of free play.

after daily driving my rx8 for a few months, i drove my friends jeep and as soon as my foot touched the gas i ripped it down the block for a couple feet, freaked me out.

Personally i love that dead zone.

I guess it comes down to personal preference, but I agree, if I drive the 8 for a week and switch back to the Protege I would over rev the clutch. If the other way around I would be bogging down because not enough rev. Maybe the solution is to put a little play in the Protege lol
