Engine Knock

I know it has been posted before, but has anyone solved the knocking question with a solution other than changing to high octane fuel? My 8 was purchased in December 04, now have about 3,500 miles on it. I use nothing other than 93 octane (91 not available here), check the oil frequently. I only get the noise at low rpm -- seems to be limited to 1st and 2nd gear (6mt). I would descripe the noise as rattling. Engine performs great So, this is more of an annoyance concern than anything. When I had ratting is a piston engine - - it was never a good thing and usually ocurred with aged vehicles on their last legs. The rattle on the 8 seems to go away at times, but no correlation to how long the car has been run, etc.

Thanks,

Ryan

^are you sure it's engine knock...does sound like it to me. take it to the dealership. something may be loose on your car (ppf maybe). since it only happens at low rpm in 1st or 2nd...do you onl yhear it during shifts? or is it constant as long as you are below certain rpms? I can hear my tranny make all kinds of sounds but i have a rp short shifter which is a lilnoisier...but the noises are normal. i can just hear the synchros ingage...which i think sounds cool as hell. i can also hear the gears spin up...but that sounds goes away after a certain speed (i.e. rpm). so maybe that is what you are hearing.

is the sound coming from by your right leg? or is it from behind the dash? please give a lill more info on the "sound" so we can better find out what the problem is or at least where it is coming from.

What rpm does the noise occur at. It could be as simple as the S-DAIS system operating.

Thanks for the info. Always find something helpfull on our forum. The knocking sound only occurs when the car is in gear and I noticed this week it doesn't happen when reving the car in neutral. It goes away when it reaches about 4k rpm, and the engine just purrs nicely the rest of the time. Sound occurs briefly at light or heavy throttle.
