Drop a piece of broken oil cap into engine

Once you put oil in the engine where does it go?

I am planning to change the oil and filter and if must drop the oil pan.

I drove the car on the track when it happened. Then drove it another 100 miles home. If it did any damage it would have already done it.

Oil filler goes down through an iron to the pan. The pickup has a filter so it should be either in the pan or on the filter. Unless it's a lot of small pieces you will probably be fine. The filter on the pickup is pretty big and it will take a bit to clog it.

Assuming it makes it that far. The upper oil purge chamber bolts to the bottom of the UIM and also acts as a UIM support where it bolts to the engine. It's possible that it is hung up inside there since there are multiple internal chambers and flow path changes inside it. You can remove the UIM, remove the upper purge chamber (also contains the vacuum chamber for the SSV/VDI/Air solenoid valve operation) and see if you can fish it out.

There are DIY threads for removing the UIM assembly. Once you get it off it will be obvious how to unbolt them from each other

This diagram shows them separated

Before I start going at it. Is it even worth taking everthing apart if it isn't going to cause an issue.

I would bot worrie about it, but ud make a point of pulling the uim and turning it over to try, pretty soon. That should take 1.5 hours or so. Maybe 2-3 total being your first time

+1. Just be careful not to drop anything else in there while it's apart Take your time, don't rush.

Leaving it assumes it doesn't break up and cause an issue somewhere in the engine ...

You could look down there for it. Harbor Freight has a small bore scope with a mirror for the end. You could see if it is stuck in the upper area.

It is not in the umi, took it off and the oil inlet pretty much just drain straight in. Unless the piece is huge it won't get caught in the umi. Check the filter and oil too. No traces of plastic.

Will it break down in oil .... No. Will it pass through the oil strainer .... No. Will it do any damage anywhere else in the sump .... No. Would I pull things apart , potentially creating anther issue by doing so , to get it out ....No

Before this thread you would also say; will the oil cap break off like shown in the picture ... No

Otherwise not my engine/problem so then no bfd for me either way

It depends on how **** you want to be I guess .
If it was a formula one car , I would def. go looking for it . Just in case that million to one chance eventuated and it did some damage and cost me the F1 championship

For a street driven RX8 worked on by an amateur mechanic you have to ask : Is there more likelihood creating a problem pulling stuff apart or just leaving it alone ?
