Check Engine Light

Hello.

I have a mazda rx8 231 bhp. The Check engine light has come on. It is due for a service. I have read up on this and seems that alot of people are sayin it cud be due to the spark plugs need replacing? but mazda dealership have recommeneded i put it on the diagnositics machine first. Any ideas what the most common fault is for this light?

I cannot resit to throw in my answer

It is DTC_CODES[Random(140)] :p

Maybe you forgot to tighten your gas cap, P0442 is the most common code I've seen, for other catless car, it is code P0420.

Stop the guessing game and have the dealer pull the code.

Quickly.....tell us before that dart hits us in the @ss.

The dealer will probably charge to read the code(no offense Teknics), so why not just go have it read at a local autoparts store? Some will do it for free.
Also..........you need to answer the questions posed above by Dozer.

We can't read you mind, and we can't read your cars mind.

lol depends on mileage of car, still in basic warranty no charge out of basic diag starts at 1 hour minimum.

no offense taken, because if he has to go to dealer for repair we still normally charge a diag fee since printing out a code tells us nothing about the situation and it will still require diagnosis . but get the code however you want and at least online we can be more helpful for free.

Ok. my car has done 34,700 miles. Its an 04 plate. The light blinks as i drive. Started it up today and i can smell this eggy burny smell.. similiar to a catalystic converter smell but smells like burnt egg!

I drive it and its got this weird nooise it makes .. almost like me exhaust is blowing.. high revs it sounds normal but low ones it dont.

I have a feeling it may cut out on me at lights as it keeps goin under 1k revs.

Ive read in the manual this light can also indicate a problem with the emissions...you rekon this and the burning eggy smell could be the problem? At first i thought it was miss firing as when you watch the smoke out of the exhaust it pumps it out as normal then small little puffs then larger ones etc. Ne ideas folks?

Gas Cap (tank not pressurized) and O2 sensor are the most common anomalies, but it could obviously be a number of other things.

Sulfur dioxide (rotten egg) smell is most often catalytic converter related. Here's a sulphur smell TSB: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...43-06-1678.pdf

Note that there is an EMISSION RECALL 4206F, which replaces the spark plugs.

The code... we need the code .....

Easy_E1.......you are cracking me up with that ****! Thanks! Take a theme and run with it!

Anyway...........we really do need that code. It does sound like a misfire(coils, plugs), but some of what he says makes it also sounds like a bad kitty.......so..........WE NEED THE CODE(S).

I can only hope he takes the advice and gets it read somewhere and reports back.

.

Ok took it to the dealer today.

He said that code stated it was miss firing straight away.

It was 2 of the coils that cause the problem. Had them both replaced. Cost £45 each! he did recommed i get all 4 done BUT he only had 3 in stock.

He sed if it starts struggling i.e missfiring again its most likely the other 2 that will need doing then.

He checked me spark plugs and wires and said they were fine. It had its major service done a year ago so they had new plugs in then.

So seems it was just the coils that had the problem. Drives better than ever now! really smooth

Good.........glad that was it. Remember, even if you don't want to go with an upgraded ignition system in the future. Coils will be a lot less than 45 pounds(even with shipping), if you buy from a vendor on this site!
Sorry........my keyboard doesn't have the pound symbol, and didn't feel like changing to one of the alternate character sets or using the ASCII equiv.
