Car vibrates violently and stalls out after driving for a while

Hey guys, once again, helping out a friend in need.

Car is an 2004 AT. Rebuilt motor with only around 2000 miles.

The car starts perfectly, and it runs smooth till it get warm. After about 10-15 mins of driving, the car starts to vibrate (whole car), losses power and then stalls out. Even if he gives more gas, it slowly looses power and just stalls out.

Now, a couple of months back, I drove this car, and whenever in Drive, and going really slow (say 1-2 mph) the car would vibrate. It felt like someone was pumping on the brakes real fast. The whole car just shook violently. Only happened in drive. Never in neutral. So it's definitely transmission related.

He was driving the car with low transmission fluid, and then he realized he was loosing fluid, so he topped it off with some local Valvoline ATF fluid.

We tried cleaning the MAF. Changed the Air filter. Replaced coils & plugs. No luck.

Could this be transmission related?

Just a thought , but if it's shuttering at high rpm I would think a motor mount could be an issue..

But if it's related to the engine misfire and dying....then that changes a few things.

Is there any check engine light?

When you drove it a few months back, was that before or after rebuild

Probably a transmission problem

One of ATF's most important jobs is to carry heat out of the trans. The little clutchpacks inside don't do super well without it, so if the fluid is low they could break down. This seems consistent with the 'OK for 10-15 minutes of driving' scenario. What if you warm up for 20 minutes at a standstill in Park, do you still get 10-15 of drive time after? If so, this points to the trans for sure.

Also if the fluid is low, this usually that manifests as the trans not being able to upshift beyond the first couple of gears.

You may want to check what your friend put in there and maybe flush it all and out the right amount of the right fluid. But if that does nothing, start looking for a new trans.

No CEL?

Thank you so much for the replies guys. He managed to keep it idling in Park for around 40 mins. After that it died. He said he used Valvoline AT fluid. Not sure which model. No CELs.

Stumped
