Well, went to the dealer, and it was a p0302, cilinder 2 misfire. Checked the sparks, and 1 spark was a bit corroded. Cleaned it, and changed it with the spark from the other cilinder.

If it happens again, and it's on cilinder 1, the spark's the problem. Otherwise the cable probably.

If it corroded why would you even think that might be the problem ?

go buy all 4 new ones and change them all out already.

Yeah gonna do that soon....car has to go through a required checkup in a month... every car older than 3 yrs must be checked every year in NL, don't know if there's something like that in the US....

I was getting CEL lights blinking also... Had the plugs replaced and didn't have any for 2 weeks...I was still getting CEL light.... braught it in again and the code spit out bad battery.. changed battery and cel went away for 2 more weeks....Then I got two in one day under heavy acceleration. Now I am bringing it back again... See what it is this time...

Oh wow. I just had this one on my AT right before the wreck. Its your spark plugs. Take them off and look at them. You may have to change them.

had hesitation and blinking CEL for about 10 seconds. then it went away. the car drove normally at 75mph after that.

04 6sp 37K miles. its been damp and i had just washed the car (but thats not new).

have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow but warranty expired last september so think i will try changing the plugs first.

previously, for about a month thought there was sometimes hesitation when the car was first driven in the morning- wasnt sure. its not that cold here, 40's at night are about as cold as we get. but today it was obvious there was something wrong for a couple of miles before i floored it and got the blinking CEL.

it could be fuel pump, could be sparks, could be coils, could be plugs, could be alot of things. the worst is engine.

start with plugs first.

dealer said rear o2 sensor and coils on #1 were bad. i picked up the car and will install the parts this weekend. no more dealer, $130 to diagnose? getting a code reader too.

how come the o2 sensor and coils arent covered under the emissions warranty?

After changing my coils, plugs and wires the blinking check engine light hasn't been back. Im pretty sure mine was due to the plugs. Looks to me like they should be changed every 20K miles, which im going to do from now on.

Had the same problem last week where I was accelerating to get on the freeway and left it in 3rd to let the RPMs get up to clear out the carbon off the plugs. CEL flashed for a few seconds I lost power temporarily and then the CEL went out. A few minutes later it came back on solid. I took the car to the dealership the next day and they said I had low compression and would be getting a new engine. I have 04 MT with ~36K miles fortunately under warranty.
It sound like Mazda is having all kinds of issues with these engines.

Rotor 1 misfire.

Also noted on the repair ticket was high oil consumption.

I just started having the flashing CEL problem today, right after the dealership replaced part of the negative battery cable due to corrosion. It'll only happen when I rev the car into the upper RPM range.

I guess I find it a hell of a coincidence that this problem happens right after the dealership touches my car. Of course it's out of warranty as well. I redlined the thing all damn day yesterday and it runs flawlessly, now every time I drop the hammer I get a CEL.

Bummer. I'm having Autozone run the code tomorrow because the hell if I'm paying Mazda another hour's worth of labor to screw my car up even more.

i had it in fourth going out on the highway tonight at about 90 or so and it wouldn't go past 104 or 7k and then I turned around to go back home and gunned it and the CEL started blinking and then turned off. Full tank of gas too... and I just got my recall done, lol. This seems to fit the description of a misfire though, should I be looking at replacing the plugs (never done it, need help maybe)? I guess I better pull them out and look at them.

I thought my engine was going out! This thread saved my sanity.

Could have something to do with ECU not having enough time to learn the new maps from the recall.
