Advice on Plugs and Coils.

Hello everyone. I have a quick question about what I should do with my car. After extensive searching, I've concluded that my plugs and coils need to be replaced. (I just barely went over 31k Miles on original coils/plugs)

One hot day (98 degrees) I drove a few miles to a store. After sitting maybe 5 mins I started it up and it was idling TERRIBLY ERRATIC. When I tried to drive away, the car would barely move. The CEL was blinking so I stopped moving. I tried to give it a little gas and it wouldn't rev higher than 3k. All of a sudden, it balanced out and revved fine. The CEL stopped blinking after a few seconds. I proceeded to drive away and it happened again. So I parked my car and I'm scared to drive it now. I called my Stealership and Coils and Plugs are well over $500. Ridiculous.

My question is this: Is it okay to drive for a few days while I wait for new plugs/coils? I've found plugs on Amazon for about $20 each (Ouch) and can't find coils under $50. (YIKES)

I don't know what I'm trying to accomplish with this topic, I guess just a really great success story that someone could pass along. I can do all the work myself, I just have no idea where I'm going to get an extra $300 from.

The problem with your ignition coils and sparks plugs going bad is your cat converter can go as well. I would order your plugs and coils asap. I am not going to say it is or it is not safe to drive your car. But keep in mind the cat converter is covered under federal emission for 8ys/80k miles.

Or you can order ignition coils, spark plugs and spark plug wires from Race Roots for $290. That way you will get all your ignition componets at the same time.

Cool, thanks a ton man. I'm going to see if anyone locally carries the plugs and change them ASAP. I'll order the Coils and wires as soon as I can. I'm beyond broke.. haha.

Do I have to have a CEL for a bad cat in order for it to be replaced? I suspect my cat is going bad because of the fuel smell, noise, and slight decrease in performance. No bogging or CEL yet.

When my cat converter went i had no CEL, just really really bad performance. The car would barely move. Thank God I was near the mazda dealership and got a free rental while they fixed it. Keep in mind that i was still in the original 4yr/50k warranty, that is why i had the free rental.

OP, if you can't find the $300 for standard coils/cables then I guess it's a waste of time to recommend the BHR Ignition System, but it sure would likely resolve your issues and provide longevity and reliability.

Ok, some new info that I've never seen or heard of. I actually found the Spark Plugs at a local parts store ($38 a piece, talked him down to $20.] So, I replaced the plugs, (which looked effing terrible] fired my car up and everything ran amazing! .... for about 24 hours.

I left work for lunch and tried to start my car, and it was doing the mis-firing thing again. So, I totally assume It was the coils all along. But I have to wait for a bit to replace them.

My question is, should I do an ECU reset? I did the 20 brake pump reset, but I'm not sure which RAM that resets. I remember reading something about there being 2 resets.

Could someone else help me with the second reset? If that will fix my problem.

you could just disconnect your battery for 10 minutes, that should do it...
