2004 rx8 is idling badly..need help..

it is idling (after warmup) at down around 700ish and when it dips down into that the car shakes....i have read up on here about MAF being dirty but i want your opinion on what the dealership has told me...

i called kerry mazda in florence and asked if they would take a look at the car because the air filter had a bunch of oil in it and the car is idling bad..also getting terrible gas mileage..i know i know..they all do...but no this is getting BAD mileage....i filled it up and ran it out..then put another ten bucks in...and happened to look at the odometer after that gas was out and i had only made it 250 miles..this was mostly highway miles...

anyways the dealer wants 85 bucks to look the car over...i ask

"isnt this under warranty?
dealer-"the warranty is up"
me-"wasnt the warranty exteded"
dealer-only the seals and emmissions such as cat. convert"
me-what about the known recalls for this car
dealer-theres none..just a re flash for cars that have a total loss of power
me- the car is also using up a lot of gas
dealer-its a sports car

anyways...to my knowledge and correct me if im wrong..the cars were all recalled to have a test done? i may be wrong

should i have the reflash done? i dont know what mine is..

should the car still be under warranty for things such as oil in the filter? and rough idle..it only has 42k miles....

what would you guys do go ahead and pay them the $$? i cant stand the bad idle...i hate driving a car that isnt running right...

and the gas....is gonna break me

would a dirty MAF cause this?

You must not be the first owner, I would guess.

700 is normal, car shaking is normal. It sucks, but it's normal. Cobb AccessPort changes the idle to around 800 to help reduce the shaking, but I can still feel it. If you're at about 500-600 then you're likely gonna have the car die on you.

Oil in air filter means that someone put TOO MUCH OIL in the car and it got into the air filter. This can definitely mean your car will get bad gas mileage and run like ****. Get an oil change and make sure your oil level is correct, have the air filter replaced, run some octane booster (I like the NoS brand, no it's not really NOS but it increases the octane by 60 points), rev your car for about 10 minutes at 6-7k on the highway, probably in 2nd gear is the best bet. This will clear out any gunk and ****.

Also, being an 04 you're out of warranty if you're past the 60K mark, not 40K. I should know because I had my engine replaced at 55K.

Have you replaced your spark plugs? The dealership should do this free if they find a problem with them. If they don't do it free, do it yourself.
Have you replaced your ignition coils and cables? The dealership should do this free if they find a problem with them, and more than likely they WILL find that they need to be replaced.

Once you get all that done, if it still runs like **** have a compression test done on your engine, my guess is that's not the problem because your car still actually runs.

no im not the 1st owner..just bought this car sat...and i really love it...its not the fastest buy it is the most fun car i have ever driven

the guy told me my warranty was up early this year..b.c its now over 4 yrs old.

the plugs im sure have never been changed..since it still had a pink air filter and oil in it i would assume that was never changed as well..so i would really doubt the plugs were..hopefulyl all of the oil changes were done..the oil is not over flowing now.in fact i had to add a quart....the dealership sure doesnt sound like they plan on doing anything for free.....

the shaky idle...why does it only happen after the car is warm?

5yr/60K warranty.

Change the plugs, filter, oil, and demand the work done free - it's still under warranty and bitch if they won't. Bitching helps.

Not 100% sure as to the reasoning behind it shaking worse when its warm than when cold, but I found that my car would idle like a tornado was shaking it when it would rain - and sometimes a full loss of power to the gauge cluster would ensue and yada-yada, mazda replaced my engine, ignition coils and cables, spark plugs and wiring.

If you just bought the car this past Saturday then bring her right back to the dealership. Ask to talk to the sales manager first, if they ask for what just tell them "I have issues with a car I just bought from you.". He/She will come out and tell them your having issues with the car that you JUST BOUGHT. He or She will most likely grab a Service Rep or the Service Manager (insist on a Service Manager if he brings you over there.).

Bring the Service Manager out to your car, pop the hood and show him your air filter and ask him "Is that Normal?" give him little information as possible right now, dont mention you just bought it or anything. After the eventual no answer tell him you just bought the car and it should of had a oil change before you bought it. The person who did the oil change must of obviously over filled the oil and it ran into your intake. Mention how you heard there is also a TSB about fixing this so it wont happen in the future, this is warrentied under Bumber to Bumber but stress how you just bought the car and feel its unfair you should have to pay for the mistake of one of HIS tech's.

On the engine shaking. I've had my motor mounts replaced now twice if the shaking is violent to the point you feel like you now have a vibrating chair option on your Rx8 then they are shot. Other tell tale signs are shaking at stops be it short or long not just at start up. This is covered under the Power Train Warrenty we had extended to 60k so your all set. Also find out if your car is Mazda Cert PreOwned since you'll also have a Limited Power Train Warrenty till 100k.

Thats all and I hope I helped ya out.

Oh and the dealer saying "We'll have to contact the previous owner to see how he took care of it." Tell him to go screw and they should of looked over the car before selling it.

this is exactly what will happen when people did NOT research before buying a used car.

Most 04 has a warranty of 48 months or 50K miles. and some REALLY early 04 has longer warranty. So u might want to give MNAO a call to find out. Dont believe everything that the service writer tells you.

i did some research...i didnt think the car was gona have any problems...my mistake...anyways the dealer im calling isnt the one that i bought it from...but after owning it I read that the warranty was extended...and if it has a warranty i would like the oil in intake adressed as well as the rough idle and 10mpg im getting....

am i wrong about the extension of the warranty?is there a way to know if the car was one affected by recalls? if its motor has been replaced?

update: reflash has been done..so far its running well

mechanicsaid the oil in my filter is causeed by condensation in the motor and would cost 400 to fix..and it needs new plugs which they would gladly do for $450...........lmao ya right...

Oil does not have to be over filled for this problem.

Just put a filter on the oil neck and cap of the intake.

No more problem.

Check out the DIY section.
