I'm getting ready to swap fluids in my AT tranny and Diff and I can't seem to find the thread where I was told what type of fluid to use. I remember it wasn't normal tranny fluid and the gear oil is different, right?

Anyway, can you guys point me in the right direction? I know Mazda sells it for a pretty penny, but can't you buy cheaper fluids that do the trick w/o the Mazda logo?

Oh, the volumes of each fluid needed would be great too.

Hey man.. the easy way to do the trany is just get it flushed.. but as for the Rear diff is extremly easy... Buy 2 Quarts of Redline 75W90 which is really good... and here is the DIY thing for it..http://www.5cats.org/rx8/trans_diff_refill/

Thanks for the heads up on the dif oil. I read that DIY thread a few minutes before the thread posting. I must not have caught the oil weight. I did not the Red Line brand mentioned in several threads though.

The dealer wants about $200 for the tranny fluid swap. I can't imagine parts and my time being more than a $200 value. I have access to a car lift, oil disposal and tools for something like $2.50/hr on base, so it seems the way to go to me. They even have an air ratchet for each bay to make bolt removal easier on the wrists.

For AT fluid, u need something that has JWS 3309. That means, most AT fluid today will do.

For Rear. like lilring saids, Redline 75w90 is good. The Requirement calls for GL-5 level fluid. Keep that in mind.

thanks man. I didn't check the manual because I assumed it would tell me to go to Mazda and get the stuff, just as every other car I've owned told me to go with the car company's house brand.

Does the AT fluid say it has that (compound?) in it plainly on the bottle? It's been a while since I've bought AT fluid, so I"m a little unclear. Any favorite brand? I know that can be completely subjective, but I thought I'd ask since you're here.

so if im reading everything right here... Royal Purple/Redline 75W-90 gear oil is fine for the AUTO rear differential right? I just drained it and switched it, so i want to double check it all again before i drive around...Everything ive found says its fine. any input?

Yep, it's fine. The problem with that gear oil had to do with the MT tranny, not the diff in either case.
