Something that might help with flooding issue?

OK, sure the M flash is supposed to help alleivate the flooding issue, but does it get rid of it entirely?

Has anyone thought to install a turbo timer to the car even tho it doesn't have a turbo, to keep your car running for an allotted time? It'll keep the car running for a determined set of time after you pull the key and shut off automatically.

(Just a random idea that came to me after 5 sour apple martinis last night.... 1st time I had them and they taste just like drinking a liquid Jolly Rancher. They went down scary fast and they hit me umm... quickly.)

Having the engine running without a key is a big no no. No car company or legit businesses would take the liability risk and design such a product. Also “turbo timers” do not keep the engine running, they just keep up the oil pressure to the turbo bearings long enough for the impeller to spin down. Also there have been threads earlier in the years trying to find post M-flash flood victims and I do no recall there being any. In fact there was one famous A-hole that was trying to get his 8 to flood on purpose for lemon law reasons and could not.
How many more things can carmakers and the government put on cars to save us from ourselves? Were too busy to spend 2 minutes to check tire pressure so lets add $400 to a set of tires and put in TPMS. Who needs to check oil lets install a low oil light. How many times during a week does the average driver take 2-minute drive with a cold engine? If you do there is a procedure in the manual on how to shut of the car, rev to 3000 and turn off the car. Simple isn’t it?

Um, actually turbo timers DO keep the engine running. Not sure where you got your info from, but my 98 Eclipse GST had one, and it kept the engine running the whole time the timer was on.

Yup, turbo timers keep the car running for as long as the timer is set.
Was taking some pictures of my '8 and a turbo'ed supra and he kept leaving it running during shots(using the timer).

was that OEM or aftermarket? But I was wrong and did find some aftermarket timers that keep the engine running. My first post was based on older info regarding turbo's

It was just 'one of them thoughts' I had for just a little extra insurance. You can choose to turn it on or not... (like after the car was running for a while, of course you don't need it) but if you want to move the car just for a minute and walk away (like I have to shuffle cars in the driveway)... I can't see where it would hurt to have the TT on and running for 3 minutes and shut off automatically.

Any more thoughts?

I brought this up over a year ago and got blasted by many members who did not either understand how the timer works or they just didn't like them. Most of the posts revolved around the "fact" that turbo timers are not even needed on turbo vehicles. That of course can be debated.
What cannot be debated is that the turbo timer installed in an 8 will help you if you turn off the vehicle in a short hop situation. Eg. You move the car a few feet, turn off the key, and since the car does not stop running you remember to put the key back in and let it run for a few minutes. It will not help in a stall situation.
I say it is worth it if you are worried about flooding or have have multiple floods. I have never flooded, even after a couple of short trip mistaken turnoffs and now with the flash to M I doubt I will consider it.
BTW, I have TTs installed in both of my turbo cars and I believe in them on a couple levels--awareness of the temps that I shut my cars off being the most important--esp on the 7.
Also most of the reasons people discount them are basically bunk, they are ridiculously easy to make the countdown stop (drop the ebrake and the car turns off as normal) and the 30seconds you would set it to run would not fill your garage with CO2 and kill your family.

any additional info (like the turbo timer) can be a good feedback thing. If it works for you, that's great. don't mind those flamers.

I Don't really understand why you need a turbo timer post m-flash. I am so confident with the m-flash that i was teaching my girlfriend to drive stick on the 8 (twas her bday wish, how generous am i?) and she kept stalling multiple times and we started up with no probs.

I too, had a turbo timer in my talon tsi but see no use for it on the 8. Maybe when you get a turbo for your car. But they have to fix that side seal problem.

I am proud that my thread was the first to suggest this idea, if only because I am not an idea man. I have my talents, but ideas are not amongst them usually.
I still stand by the concept, but it seems that flooding is not nearly as prevelant as before, so I am not sure of its cost versus usefullness at this point.
Not to mention, that thread I started sparked more nasty words from me (to people dissing me on weird points) than every other thread I have posted in--other than my dirty wheel thread maybe.

Yes, but she wasn't stalling multiple times while the engine was completely cold, was she?

It's been well documented that shutting the engine off "early" and allowing it to cool and stalling when the engine is cold (like when pulling out of the garage first thing in the morning or out of your parking space at work at night) are the main flooding concerns.

A turbo timer helps with the first, but a slip of the clutch pedal could still result in the latter...

Hmmm.... Seems there's a little hole in your logic. I have the "M" flash and just last night my car flooded. Anyone here on the forum who knows me knows that I rev my engine to 3.5k rpms everytime I shut the car down and yesterday afternoon I moved the car, let it warm up to 1/4 the way on the temp guage, and revved it to 3.5k for 10 seconds. When I went to start the car last night to go to the store it would turn over but not fire up! WTF! I have been very careful about the flooding issue and now I am going to Vancouver, BC this weekend to meet up with some of our RX-8 buddies in Canada and I may not have my car back in time! What if this happened while I was in BC and supposed to be headed back home?

As you can tell I am just a little bit pissed off that this has happened to me when I am so careful about it! So lay off the preaching and take into consideration that it may just happen to some of us regardless of what we do. And some I guess will just never experience it.

I had a Greddy turbo timer on my '91 MR2 turbo and it kept the car running I had it set for 2 min. which was a good setting for a car putting 24 psi to the turbo :D

It wouldn't hurt your car to run for 3 min after you shut it down, it would be like you were stuck in traffic. I am going to be installing the Compustar alarm in my 8 and that has a remote start option I will be adding. I can keep the doors locked and let it run until I choose to shut it down and it has a 1.25 mile range so I don't have to be next to the car. It costs a little bit more than a turbo timer with installation but you get a way better than factory alarm with it as well. It pages you and lets you know what part of the car is being violated. Kewl stuff if you ask me.

For a full install with remote start is about $500 here in Spokane. But this is the same alarm I had on my M3 and my wife has on her 325xi. I highly recommend it. They have different packages too that are less expensive with the remote start some with 2 way communication for .25 miles and some without two way communication. If you consider that the Greddy is about $85-100 and to have someone else install it is going to be about $75-150 the Compustar option is more expensive but then you don't have to wait around your car to set the alarm, you don't get a bad *** alarm, and you don't have the two-way paging system so that you know what is happening to your car. It keeps the imobilizer and everything active when you use the Compustar.

Counting 93rdcuttent, I've seen at least three "post-M" flooding posts on this board, although I'm not keeping a very careful count. As the weather gets cooler and wetter, I'm betting we see more, especially among those who are running around thinking that M is a silver bullet.

Sorry about the car, 93rdcurrent: when it does happens, it really sux. Let us know how you get the car up and running, and -- my particular point of interest -- how your dealership treats you through the process.

It's at the dealership now and I have a crappy Mitsu Mirage. It's gotta be a '97 or earlier .
I bet the dealership will treat me pretty good since MNAO had to get involved when they didn't want to do the "M" flash initially. I don't take the "Your car isn't showing any starting issues so we aren't able to do it..." answers. They were even supposed to have put in the hotter plugs too. We'll see how that goes. They better have the car back to me by Thursday so I can drive to Vancouver and meet up with Wakeech, Incosequential, and other 8 owners. I've been looking forward to this trip for a couple of months now.
