Series of problems leads to new engine

Can't find any other posts where anybody else has had the same issue and I looked around with the search tool.

It all began with a dealership changing the gear oil and not tightening the oil plug. Then, the 2nd gear started grinding and Mazda gave me a hasstle with the Warranty. They told me I abused the car which is total BS.
The next thing I know the day I picked it up the transmission strated leaking and burning gear oil on the exhaust.
They fixed that a 1 or 2 weeks later I still smelled oil burning and took it back in...
This time the oil metering pump had a leak. They fixed that issue and I drove the car for another week or so and I could still smell burning oil and I took it back in.
They had to replace the front engine seal this time. They returned it again... I took it for a test drive with the tech, because 2nd gear still grinds when the car has been sitting over night even when I warm it up, and the CEL came on. he took it into the garage and said it was a timing issue on a pully. They fixed and I left 20 min later on my way home, the CEL came on again and was flashing. I could still smell oil.
I took it back in and they did a series of compression tests, all of them failed. Now Mazda is replacing the engine.
The car has 29000 miles on it and 2nd gear still grinds when the car is left sitting over night..

Anybody else hear of this before? Any Ideas on what I should do?

It been a bunch of BS and I'm at the point of law suit and Lemon law. I have not been able to drive my car much for the last month and a half. Don't get me wrong I love the RX but I think I got a Lemon :-(

Dealership always gives you BS because they don't make much money on warrenty repairs. They only get a cetain amount from warrenty even if they take twice as long to fixed it.They usually get about one-half of the normal charge from warrenty. If those f**kers give you more problem, you should sue the dealership because they are the ones who seems to f**ked up your car. Also sounds like the techs there don't reall yknow sh*t if they keep on f**king up on your car.I also had a similar problem that they kept my car for a month because of an electrical problem(car wouldn't start one day & door sensor light on for no reason) & they told me they couldn't figure it out & they need more time.More time turns out to be a month!

I would try Red Line or Royal Purple in tranny and diff. for 2nd gear problem. If syncros are a litttle out of whack it may help. Ther is a DIY on this and I sure would use it rather than the mechanics you are dealing with.

Actually I forgot to mention that shortly after the tranny repair that I brought it in to show them the grinding was still a problem and they replaced the gear oil with Royal Purple Gear Oil. I might try the RedLine I bought the test it out. It still grinds when I get in in the morning after the car has been sitting over night. It seems like the oil drips off from gravity and over night it's all gone and I have to get the thing moving to get the gears coated again.

Find another dealership to get your Mazda serviced! Either you have a real lemon, or your service department is breaking things faster than they can fix them.

In my experience, the less work a dealership does on a car, the higher the probability that the car will run reliably.

Either way, good luck! :o

You won't fix the second gear grind with Red Line, IMO. I changed to MT-90 as so many here have raved about it....but there was no difference. It's not like I have freezing temps overnight either, the coldest it ever gets here is about 35degF.

I haven't tried the 50-50 MTL/MT-90 mix, though.

I asked the dealer to change the MTF at 12,000 just to get any filings out of gearbox - asked dealer to put in Synthetic Gear Oil. Immediately after the car shifted very poorly.

Got Red Line MT-90 and the dealer put it in for free. Shifting was much better.

I now have 26k+mi on the car and also have the 2nd gear grinding when cold.

I've been driving manual "sport sedans" for the last 20 years. I don't race or red-line often and have never had this kind of transmission problem before.

Will mention the grinding the next time I'm at the dealer.

I forgot to mention that I had a huge hasstle with Mazda and the dealer I had to take it to 2 differnet dealers. and It took some effort to finally get mazda to cover the tranny issue under warranty. They claimed it was caused by wear and tear...

My old XR4TI had tranny trouble. Turns out the donut was sturck, but they put in ATF according to the manual. Only lasted 10K miles and the same bearing kept wearing out. Then a mechanic found a TSB that said use "special" fluid $20 a quart from Germany. Went another 60K with no trans trouble before the motor went. I guess that the special fluid was probably synthetic, but from now on I wouldn't take any chances with cheap fluids, use synthetic first. Trans repairs are way more than a couple cases of any fluid.

Lemon! Get rid of it! Persue lemon law actions and have the dealer replace the entire car.

Was at the dealership today for an oil change and explained the shifting problem:

1. Grinds 1-2 when cold.
2. Difficult to down-shift.
3. Car needs to almost be stopped to get into first gear at a light.

They claimed the transmission "performed to manufacturers specifications".

Now the complaint's on the record.

More to come.

your synchro is broken. bet money if you get a tranny shop to take it apart it isn't performing it's function. which is to get the gear up to proper rpm to slide in place. if you don't get resolution to the problem try letting your rpms drop before sliding it in second.
