Always tow lighter than the car. 500-1000 lbs is a good general rule of thumb. If you want to know the recommeded capaciity a good hitch will have that info.
The car can tow more but consider going downhill. That weight will want to get in front of the car so not a good idea, especially stopping. Also, a lot of stress on the engine which is common sense but short distances now and then nothing to worry about.
I wish Mazda would bring back a small truck with a rotary. I would buy one right now. It's a great engine for pulling.
