I have noticed there is a verity of rx8 trailer hitches for sale. Would towing something small like a seadoo jetski be harmful to the car

No, not at all, the RX-8 is a great tow vehicle.

Obviously it is not ment for towing... but how much harm would a light tailer cause if used twice a year

Always tow lighter than the car. 500-1000 lbs is a good general rule of thumb. If you want to know the recommeded capaciity a good hitch will have that info.

The car can tow more but consider going downhill. That weight will want to get in front of the car so not a good idea, especially stopping. Also, a lot of stress on the engine which is common sense but short distances now and then nothing to worry about.

I wish Mazda would bring back a small truck with a rotary. I would buy one right now. It's a great engine for pulling.

In college I use to install hitches. I put them on just about everything, including Miatas lol!

If you decide to put on a hitch just make sure it's a reputable company and inspect the work. Tell them you want the instructions that came with the hitch so you can look everything over.

On smaller cars it can get very tricky lining everything up correctly and it has to be installed to specs to work properly.
