Play in steering wheel

I had my engine replaced in my '04 MT a couple weeks ago under warranty. Before the replacement, when I turned my steering wheel either direction while moving straight, the wheels would instantly turn. The steering was nice and very crisp.

Now after getting the car back, when going straight, there is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of play before the wheels turn in either direction. Once they are turned one way, there is no play before turning back the other way, it is only when going straight that I notice it.

Is this an alignment issue? Would any component of the steering system be adjusted or moved during engine replacement (I can't think of one...)

Thanks.
