oil usage
hey i have read and heard from the dealer that oil should be checked about every two tankfus. i have put two tanks of gas in my rx 8 and i cant see it has used any oil. i now how to read a dipstick, at least i have on my other cars, and it kind of makes me nervous . am i doing something wrong or do some cars not use very much oil?

your fine. check again in 2 tankfuls and if it still hasn't gotten low than extend it to 3 tankfuls. you'll get the hang of how much your car is using at how many miles, then you can change the interval between checks.

It seems more sensible to me to go by mileage intervals rather than fillups. The engine shouldn't consume a lot of oil. As zoom44 wrote, you can decide on an interval after a little experience with your car.

I am at the 2500 mile point and it looks like I am just about there to add a quart.
The froth and foam on the dipstick (see other threads for more info on this) makes determining the oil level very difficult.
I have tried to check the oil when it is cold (not the best way to do it) to see if the froth had drained off of the dipstick over night allowing me to see the markings better...didn't help much.

Oh well, toss in a few gallons and the engine will spit out what it can't use anyway. Heh heh

RRrRrrrrrrr....varoom! <gurgle> *wheEeeEzzzZZe* Sputter - SpLOooOOSh!
Darn! Where'd all that oil come from?

Increase in Oil Usage after Flash
I've had my RX8 for about 2 years now and have 21k miles on it. I had the had all the flashes, except for the most current recall. When the last flash was done about 2 months ago, I would add between 1 and 2 quarts between oil changes at 5k miles. Right after the flash, my oil usage has gone to adding a quart about every 800 miles. This does not seem good. Oddly, there is less soot in the tailpipes. I have been using Castrol 5W-20 the entire time.
Has anyone else seen their oil usage go up? Another change after the flash, was a much rougher idle. I mentioned it to the mechanic and he said he did only the flash.
This car makes me more and more nervous the longer I own it. It's been back to the dealer at least 12 times since I have owned it. Flooding, poor AC, recalls, now rough idle, another recall, and high oil consumption. I keep thinking it will finally be sorted, but more problems keep cropping up.
I'm considering selling it and driving my new Kia Spectra5 winter car(my old Honda died) full time.
