No it is not possible, and why would you want to do it?..
1. the 09 has a longer (larger) filter.
2. the new oil filter location is closer to the new Higher pressure Oil Pump.
3. I seriously doubt if there would be room to "re-locate" it because of the two new EMOP's located on to of your engine.
4. Plus replacing engine parts....
Sorry mate but one of the silliest suggestions I have ever heard, all these changes were done for a very good reason.

There are relocation kits on the market that will let you put locate the filter just about anywhere in the engine bay. The advantage as you see, would be having it in a more accessible location. It also enables you to use a larger filter, or even a 2nd bypass filter if you wish. The disadvantage in my mind would be introducing more chances for an oil leak. Not sure about the effect on oil pressure, but I'd guess the pressure drop across the filter would be more than from a length of hose, and could be mitigated by use of a larger filter.
You just need to find a kit that has the same thread dimensions and flange diameter as the car's filter pedestal.

^^^, there are re-location kits for an 09 Renisis..I would like to see that!...
Where are you going to relocate it to?
And I am certain Mazda and you dealer would be happy to see it....But don't worry about your New Car Warranty.....you don't need it.

Yeah, I know it is a pain in the *** to Renew your filter, get the car up in the air high enough, take the sump guard off, then contort your hand to unscrew the filter...I don't particularly like it either.
But you get used to it.
Most other "banger" cars have their filters in crap places.
Past rotary guys have had it too easy...for too long..

Seriously, Mazda moved the filter to this location for a good reason, they needed the space, but more importantly the filter is only 3.58 inches from the Oil Pump itself, so clean oil which goes into the new EMOP does not have far to travel.
All earlier Rotaries the oil has to go from the pump (same location as 09) to the other end of the engine and UP.
Seriously, Mazda moved the filter to this location for a good reason, they needed the space, but more importantly the filter is only 3.58 inches from the Oil Pump itself, so clean oil which goes into the new EMOP does not have far to travel.

Admittedly I haven't really examined an '09, but really, there isn't anywhere accessible under the hood where one could put a relocated filter assembly? Or are you worried about pressure drop, restriction? It's not clear to me. The new MOP is sensitive to oil pressure? There's just some context I must be missing.

that just made my idea of getting a 09 a simple choice. part of the deal is dealer has to do all oil changes for free as part of the sale!
ash. any more thoughts on a 09 fuel pump test. i did one, and it spun. but a more definitive answer would make me feel better.

Yes, the new 09 oil pump runs at about 50% higher oil pressure @ 3000 RPM when compared to previous rotaries.
The additional pressure is there for the two EMOP's which aren't actually a pump in the way we think they are, they have no impellers or rotors that run on a shaft to supply oil to the injecting "nozzles/weepers", all the EMOP's are a chamber with a electromagnetic coil in each and a centre Plunger that opens and closes...that is basically it.
It is the main engine Oil Pump which does the actual PUMPING of engine oil supply and supply to the 6 Oil Nozzles...which is electrically controlled VIA PCM and OVC (Oil Control Valve), one of the EMOP's has an Oil Pressure Switch mounted on it which monitors supply/pressure of oil.
Any drop in oil pressure here would obviously initiate a CEL/Warning lamp.
So what concerns me is where would you mount any relocated oil filter kit and how far from the original location would it be positioned.
If the one represented by the link I posted is anything to go by I would be concerned about leaks with age, I don't particularly like the worm drive hose clamps.
If you could find a banjo type fitting and A1 quality hoses I guess it may be OK, but my concern is maintaining the oil pressure.
Someone else with more experience than I may wish to comment, and then there are the warranty implications in modifying the Original System.

On the FP, NAHHHH, I have not got a spare or Spares (101 isn't it.. like you have) to test, what about OD, or Old Rotor these guys know the renny much more than I.

she made one fatal mistake. sunroof! i dont even roll my windows down..
i am happy to know the pump did not fail! just have to figure out what happened at the track.

We need more rotary Buyers so they can come on here....it is VERY Quiet lately..
Mazda has to sell more if we want to see any new Rotary, my sales guy told me last week that much depends on future RX-8 sales and the new mods Mazda has done to improve engine reliability....I got the impression if it don't work it is bye bye...just my impression.

Thread revival yes ... but its the only one that I could find on the subject. Anyway, had a quick chat with Geoff over at Mazdatrix and here is what he told me about S2 filter relocation:
I thought his approach was interesting ... not sure why you wouldn't be able to just use a relocation kit like the Race Roots one, minus getting a longer braided line.... Asking.
We see no problem remote mounting the filter, but there are no parts available for the job, and you’ll really have to hunt around for a place to put it.
You will have to make a bypass/blanking plate for the stock filter. You will have to replace one of the oil cooler hoses with -10 AN hose to go to your remote mount and back to the engine.

D15706 on the Speco Thomas site seems the way to go. I wouldn't bother with the RR kit. You'll end up replacing the hoses and fittings anyway.... been there, done that with my S1.
I'd definitely look into something like this if I could do it all over again... just not sure how I'd source any of their stuff as they don't sell direct and appear to be NZ/AU only.
Interestingly their remote sender is stamped "MADE IN USA".
