Key fob programming

You can reprogram(the keyless FOB and the micro-chip) an already functioning key from one RX-8 to another. I added a used switch blade bought in eBay with my existing set(two original and a lost valet keys) without any hitch.
If you want another key, two are needed and the additional key's blade have to be copied. With only one key, in your case, the new one have to be obtained from the dealer according to the VIN of your car. There's a thread about programming a switch blade for an '04 RX-8.
However, there's a limit to how many keys can be added before the ECU deletes all saved/programmed keys. The FOB on the other, I believe, does not and could be added multiple times. Both my original 2004 FOB stopped working even after I've replaced the battery which is the reason I'm using the switch blade from a 2006 RX-8. The procedure I used to adding a FOB only works with the switch blade, it will not work with the 2004 RX-8 FOBs.

I hate to resurrect the dead, but I am a new RX8 owner, and when I bought the car, only 1 key came with it, and it is a generic brand.
It's supposed to have the "switchblade" key/fob, but I'm okay with it only having a "normal" key as the dealership calls it.
My question is this. If I get a key from somewhere other than the dealership in order to save some $$, will they still be able to program the key? I only have one, so I can't do it myself.
Thanks!
