How does this engine work exactly

I just got my wife an 09, R3. I was wondering how the engine works, I know a little about it but not a great deal. I understand that it has a rotor that spins and that is about all that I know. Thanks for any help

When I was a kid (yeah, that was a long time ago..) I built a Wankel plastic model and it ran on a 9 volt battery, so ....

None of us were born knowing how the rotary works, but certainly a relatively easy search is in order prior to asking such a question.
