I went to a BMW meet last week and I saw the Gruppe M cold air intake. I've been trying to see if anyone made one similar to the Gruppe design:

I want to preserve the stock airbox, upgrade the air filter (as rotarygod suggested) and use the Gruppe-style box to take cold air in. I don't like the current CAI designs where it hangs low ... I like the ramair look of the Gruppe and imagine the design leaves a potential for a slick airhole in the bumper.

The car has a tube that grabs air from the front right side of the car. It located in the bumper and you can see part of it when you pop the hood and look down behind the plastic panel. I think the stock box is as good as its going to get......for now

I like it although it is probably still a cone. The filter is still in the same location but you get the added benefit of direct cold air. Since the airflow is slowed down through the filter, no one can claim that the speed of air through the maf will affect it's readings like a long arm intake for the 8 has been claimed. A tube before the filter can still tune it as well.
