I just noticed that the upper part of the grill is not open. Seems to me more cooling airflow would be better. Does anybody know why only part of the grill allows air to pass through?

your crash bar is behind the upper portion of the grill. If there were vents in the grill not only would air still not pass through there it would also not look pretty
