I've actually been with a couple of guys who have done this on 12A's. Hell my buddy got a 83 rx7 for 500 bucks. The woman said it wouldn't start and he paid 500 for it poured ATF into it let it sit for a little while then hooked up a new battery and drove it away. The look on her face was priceless.

I live in Ky and apparently it is the mother land for unknowing rotary owners. In the last week two RX8's have come up for sale. Both were under 4000 dollars and both were down due to one needing a new cat and the other needed coils.

I will probably do this tomorrow and hopefully I can report back with positive results. just one question, what needs to be unplugged in the rx8 so that it doesn't start when I crank it?

Fortunately, I have an old set laying around that I will use for this.

I would use the same method as doing the seafoam treatment.

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ht=diy+seafoam

the only difference is that you would put the hose into the bottle of atf, since the guy in the diy used an aerosol can. The engine will suck it in while cranking.

I'm doing this right now. How much oil should I squirt into it?

By the way, I only disconnected the eccentric shaft position sensor as for the seafoam procedure since that was easier for me.

did you measure compression before the procedure?

well I'm done and now I'm really hoping at least I can raise the compression a few units to keep running the car while I get a new engine.

by the way, I just noticed the first picture is sideways. it needs to be rotated 90 deg clockwise lol

That's what I plan to do. I'll take the car out tomorrow to trash it for a while then I'll do it again next week. I also have half a can left of zoom engine cleaner I will also use. I just don't want to get both fluids mixed inside the engine.

I just fired my car up after almost 24 hours of rest after using the ATF. It started right up with almost not hesitation, I will go trash it for an hour and see if it starts again once the engine is fully warmed up.

Well I went to drive it hard for about an hour. I noticed the car red lines in third gear much better than before. I would struggle to get past 8500rpms and now I can carry third gear well into 9500rpms. However, my hot start issue is still present.
In addition, I shut off my car at the gym and it didnt start when I tried. It just clicked once and Eveything went dead--light, radio, tach etc. after tinkering with all the fuses--for almost and hour argh--and unplugging and repluging the battery, the tachometer and everything sprung back to life. However, when I tried to start it the same thing happened and everything died again. After several tries with the same result, I reseted the ecu using the brake pedal method and that's how the car started again.

On a side note, I didn't get as much smoke as I expected to hah.

I think FIX is a pretty strong word to apply to the ATF trick. It doesn't actually fix anything, it just gets your engine started by temporarily raising the compression enough to get the engine running. I've replaced the engine on one of my '79 RX7s years ago and also the one in my '91 RX7. Rotary engines aren't that hard to replace, I even converted my '91 from automatic to manual (not that hard either). I wouldn't suggest anyone throwing ATF fluid in their rotary thinking it's doing some good. It's more of a last resort band-aid. It's good for misquito populations though.

Lol, as I said before, my engine revs much better towards the 10000 rpms redline, so it did help in that aspect. I didn't expect it to restore my engine to new, but at least now the cold starts area a bit easier. Anyway, im replacing the engine soon so I might as well try every trick in the Internet before I discard it.

First, the "brake stomp" doesn't reset the ECU, it clears the eccentric shaft plate profile.

Second, have you replaced your battery?

Thank you for the clarification. I knew it wasn't exactly an ecu reset but I didn't know exactly what it did.
No I haven't replaced the battery as it was tested and it's fine. Plus the car car starts almost fine when it's not warmed. I am now certain of the low compression so I doubt a new battery will do much.

low compression wouldn't cause that electrical issue unless you cranked it till your battery is dead. sounds more like your starter is bad, or a bad cable/connector to your battery somewhere along the line. as far as the hot start issue. join the club..
To comment on that link: i wonder what repairs its speaking of to need to reset the KAM

I disconnected the eccentric shaft position sensor in order to do the ATF treatment-- it might have something to do with that. It hasn't happened again.
