Air Pump Delete

im thinking about removing my air pump as well.. although it does wake me up on those cold mornings with i nice melodic tune... Is the pipe that runs to the manifold easy to remove? does is come out from under the car

Define easy. Honestly, I looked briefly and it looked like a PIA so I did it this way. But I was doing a couple other things at the time so I didn't spend a bunch of time thinking about it.

Yes that is the Barometer sensor, just leave it as is. I left part 12 in to hold teh fuel pump resistor and that sensor.

I actually took the pipe out. But I only did so when I had a catless midpipe and running the Exotic Header, and decided to block it off. Quite frankly yes it's a PITA (I like adding the 'the'), you need to jack the car up, remove the passenger side engine mount, and get at it with a few extensions. There's no way you'd be able to reach up from under the car to get at it. At least I wasn't. Obviously the wheel has to be off when you do this.
I swapped headers like 3 times. I have a feeling the turbo/manifold install probably won't take me too terribly long lol..

Quick Question..
Do I leave the baro sensor vacuum nipple capped, open to all the world, or is it connected to another vacuum line somewhere?
I checked under the hood and realised I had put a nipple on this, and was wondering if that was the correct move.

You take the right front wheel off, remove the plastic rivet on the rubber flap that allows access to the side of engine from the wheel well, and reach in with a 1/4" ratchet / 10mm deep socket, take the brake line bracket loose too for easier access
only a ret@rd would need to remove the engine mount, I rest my case

I will probably be doing this next weekend Just have to decide on a Midpipe..... Either http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda4.htm or maybe http://www.rx7.com/store/rx8/rx8exhaust.html hmm or this guy http://www.thmotorsports.com/thmotor.../i-284955.aspx
sorry for thread jacking.... but i will be posting pics of my efforts. What one will be quiet? It will be paired up with the RB Catback Exhaust. Thanks guys

Hey, 9krpmrx8... great job on your mod, all though i do have some questions.
I can see that you took the air pump out few weeks back, have you noticed any improvement in gas mileage, performance wise, or anything out of the blue? I would like to know if there are any advantages by deleting the air pump or disadvantages.
Also, I would assume, in SA you guys have to take emissions test every couple years; are you planning on putting the pump back with your cat in order to pass or you just gonna swap the midpipe with the cat and that's it?
Thanks in advance...

No I have not noticed any performance gains and I wasn't expecting any. I removed it mainly for room and because it was going out so I had the loud whine at start-up. Plus it was useless since I did not have a cat.
Here in SA we do not have a sniffer test so as long as there is no CEL (I reset it before inspection each year) then there is no issue.

Advantages: one less thing that could malfunction lol, engine bay space gained
Disadvantages: depending on the level of testing that is used in your locale - you may not pass emissions w/o the pump

Removing the air pump will never result in any kind of mileage or performance gains. Its sole purpose is pumping ambient air into the exhaust stream on cold starts, this brings the cat up to operating temp quicker. It's not tied into any other system. And its not like the pump weighs anything, so it's not like you're loosing 100lbs.

However he is well versed in the rotary world and he usually doesn't throw random facts in the air. His points are usually valid and tested.
Putting his socially ineptness aside, hes a great forum member.

OP:
After doing this did you start to hear a hissing sound when letting go of the accelerator pedal? I blocked off mine after installing my headers and if I rev to 3 or 4k and let go I hear a hissing sound kind of like a slow discharge of a BOV. Thought it might be a leak but didn't find one.

No, I haven't had any hissing issues or any problems with it at all. If I had the engine out I would do it at the manifold as well but this was was quick and easy. And as for heat, well I touched the pipe after I drove for a bit and it was strangely not extremely hot at all (I could touch it for a sec without third degree burns).
