I recently purchased a somewhat low-mileage 2007 model year engine (51k w/1yr. unlimited mileage warranty) for an install into my 04 that has lost compression on the front rotor with the thought that 07/08s didn't have failures near as often as the 04/05/06 model years- My question is this: Are there any differences between the two (ie sensors, manifold, etc.) that I should know of and to swap over prior to install. In short, I don't want to have to remove part X with the new engine in the car and have it take twice as long as it would have taken had I swapped prior to install. Just doing a quick glance, I don't see anything obvious. Thanks in advance.


EDIT: With that being said, I may be disassembling the 2004MY engine and parting out if there are items that some of you may need. I can take pictures and post accordingly, but just wanted to give a heads up.

The 07-08's don't have as high of a failure rate only because the majority of those engines are not higher mileage yet. That said, we have two locals with 07's who had replacement between 50-60k and I have heard of plenty of 07' and 08' owners who have had premature engine failures.

Assuming you have a 04' 6 speed manual RX-8 and the 07 engine your purchased is from a 6 speed manual then there is no difference what so ever in the engines.

Thank you. I was fairly certain there weren't any differences, but just wanted to save myself from any potential headache that could have been easily avoided.

I should have included that information as well. Yes, 2007MY and 2004MY were both from 6 speed cars.

07/08s are, at this point, 6-7 year old cars. Even at a low estimate of 12,000 miles per year, that would still put them at 72-84k miles. I feel, based on my research prior to this decision, that there are significant powertrain management differences that have attributed to the lower failure rates. While I can't say definitively that is the case, it just seems that way from reading various forums including this one. I made the decision to replace versus rebuild due to the cost being almost identical and warranty being identical. Plus, I've got a parts engine now. That's just my view on the matter.

I wasn't referring to internals if thats what you're suggesting. I meant manifolds, various sensors, useable (theoretical) rear rotor and housing, throttle body, flywheel, etc.
