2004 MPV & 2004 RX-8 Front Passenger-Side Airbag Recalls 1604B-a and 1604B-b STOP DELIVERY

This is to notify you of a recall and STOP DELIVERY on the 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8. This recall and stop delivery notification is for dealer inventory vehicles. This message provides dealers with detailed parts information, warranty claim processing information, and repair procedures.

Beginning today, February 16, 2004, all 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8 models in dealer inventory must be inspected and repaired (if necessary) prior to customer delivery.

Selling or leasing subject vehicles without performing the necessary inspection and/or repair is prohibited by law. Failure to perform applicable recalls before delivery can result in extensive dealer fines from the Federal Government. Once 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8 models have been inspected and repaired (if necessary), customer delivery may begin.

Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that 2004 MPV vehicles produced from August 20, 2003 through February 4, 2004 fail to conform to requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, Occupant Crash Protection. Also, Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2004 RX-8 vehicles produced from April 10, 2003 through January 28, 2004.

Certain 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8 vehicles were produced with improperly wired front passenger-side airbags. The result of this problem is that the airbag will not provide adequate protection in the event of a crash. Mazda has decided to conduct a recall campaign to correct the wiring by installing a new wiring harness in the front passenger-side airbag system on all affected vehicles.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning February 27, 2004.

It is an issue, my service tech was able to pull the AirBag info (1604b) on his screen.

We have already done some stock units (i work at a dealership). most dealers now have the info on both recalls but will not have the parts until the end of Feb. or first week of March. Best advise right now is if you want to call the dealer just make an appointment for sometime in March at your convenience. do not expect anything to be done in Feb. this is for both recalls. hope this helps!

it takes about 30 minutes to do both jobs total. but the thing is the transmission recall is done right next to the cat converter so the car has to sit to cool off first. so probably a couple hours.

Fubar (no offense... ) --

Will the tech have to remove the dash or do other interior parts removal to redo the wiring harness for the pass. airbag? I'm really concerned about things getting scratched or gouged.

i have the automatic, but i'm in the vin range, so i'm guessing the i only have the airbag recall. how long will just the airbag take, and i'm also curious what does the fix entail... last time i went to get something fixed by my dealer my dash was slightly scratched up. will they have to tear the whole car apart?

(no offense taken)all they will have to do is lower the glove box all the way. there is a stopper on the assy that they have to press in. i would recomend making sure anything you have in the glove box be taken out first. nothing is in any danger of being scratched. they are just inserting a little wire pigtail.

RX-Nut, just have your mazda tech poke your vin # into his computer and the appropriate recalls will show for your vehicle. Oh yeah, fubar really helped me out in the "dark days" of pre-order.

Question...does this only relate to the passenger front air bag or is it for all of the air bags on the passenger side to include the curtain bags? The reason I ask is that in November I took a pretty good hit in the passenger side doors and the air bags did not deploy. I'm not sure if it was because I was not moving that fast or if it could be related to this.

The repair involved in this is really fast. So fast in fact that the part was delivered and installed while I was doing my financing paperwork this morning.

Crap!! Just checked ---My Mazda-- web pages and I am included on the recall. I was waiting for the dealer to call me regarding the updated "shock sensor" that was on order, now this.. ohh well. Question? Is there an update for the HEAT problem on the cupholders? (extra insulation? ) If anyone knows, please let me know so I can have all done at once. After driving for a couple of hours, the cup holder area is like a little oven in my car. I suppose this is part of first year blues, but i still love my 8 .

yes there is a tech bulletin for the heat at center console. do a search and you can see it, someone has posted it. also the techs at your dealership can get a copy easily just mention it to the service advisor.

3 recalls for a first model car seems OK to me - I think you're being oversensitive or looking to grandstand.

I had two recalls on my '01 Jeep TJ and those have been in production since '98 without major redesign, so you'd think that would be plenty of time to work out the issues.

My advice would be to sell it and fade away if it's getting to you that bad - certainly calling BS and getting all upset about it isn't going to get you very far.

Efini 8:

I would not call the recalls major. A pain - yes. Major is like my old 300ZX - wiring harness for engine due to engine fires. Nissan had to do recalls a decade plus after production.

John - March 15 is my recall repair date
