slvrstreak's latest build thread

Well my journey started back in early 2008. I was just a young 18 year old kid that had a pocket full of money and wanted a sports car. At the time I didn't know jack about cars and sure didn't know what a rotary was; I just knew that I loved this little car. This is the day I brought NA8 (Nate) home...

After flooding it my second day of ownership I quickly found this site. I read every sticky I could find and studied every bit of intel on this car that I could. I was hooked...
Thus began my modding phase...the bug bit...HARD...

All pictures below were before suspension changes

She was my daily driver for 60,000+ miles (now at 140K miles) without a single hiccup
I did quite a bit of autoX and a ton of mountain runs in this car but, I just couldn't bring myself to track her
Eventually I decided I wanted something that I could turn into more of a dedicated track car
Enter SC8 (Skate)...

NA8's mod list:
- Two-tone Brilliant black on Sunlight silver
- 6K vLED full interior/exterior
- 6K HID highs/lows/fogs

So off to Virginia I go to pick up the next piece of the story
This car is what REALLY got me hooked on the track scene
She won me a few autoX championships, fastest time at Wake the Dragon 2 years straight, countless car show titles, and introduced me to the track
To say she was a beast would be selling her short
The car was everything I ever dreamed of and then some...

Only problem is that after a while you become fast enough that to go any faster is bordering on reckless
As you're coming down the back stretch at 140 you start to think, "Hmm if a tire blew right now I would surely hit that wall over there...and if I hit that wall over there I'm pretty certain I would die."
So I realized I needed to take a few precautions before getting into W2W racing
Roll cage, safety harnesses, race seats, etc would be necessary...but as much as I wanted to I just couldn't do it
She was too beautiful...with all the exterior mods, low miles, and impeccable condition of the car I just couldn't bring myself to bang her all up
Everytime I'd take two wheels off I'd get a knot in my stomach and pat the wheel as I apologized
So I decided it was time for the last leg of my journey...
Enter BA8 (Badass 8)

So here is my final destination...a full on track car
I purchased olddragger's supercharged 8 and am in the progress of making it into a hardcore track beast
She will be trailered to all of the events from now on and introduced to Time Trials VERY soon

A little bit about the build. I will update in further detail soon:
- Pettit streetported race build with MANY modifications to the oil system, port cleaning, cooling jackets etc.
- Pettit Stage II supercharger with low boost pulley setup ~ 7-8 psi
- Upgraded bypass valve--supercharger intake tube/bypass valve port has been customed worked
- Custom worked LOWER intake manifold--runners shaped, smoothed, polished, ventilated, jet air deleted with reshaped port and VDI filled in.
- Enlarged throttle body--dremeled and smoothed supercharger intake
- Custom exhaust system, tubular header with 3" true merge collector to custom midpipe and true 3" to Racing beat catback
- Series II fuel pump
- Series II transmission with syncrosaver
- Act Pro Lite flywheel and new stage 1 clutch/throw-out/pilot bearing
- Mazmart water pump and thermostat
- Secondary Radiator with its own 180 degree thermostat
- Flex-a-lite variable fan speed controller
- Extra fan on the passenger side oil cooler with console switch
- Snow water methanol dual nozzle MAF driven system with trunk mounted 1 gallon tank
- MSD 8247 ignition system
- Boost-a-spark system to control voltage to the coils- (the oem system only supplies 12.1 voltage to the coils; the msd coils like 16 volts which means the coils dont need long dwell times)
- Upgraded air/water intercooler with a frozen boost coolant cooler - relocated coolant pump
- Moroso coolant tank with custom mount
- Grounding kit
- Oil filter relocation with stainless steel lines with AN fittings
- Silicone radiator hoses with coolant temp sensor in top radiator hose
- Polyurethane filled motor mounts.
- High output starter
- Hose candy custom lines/fittings in engine bay
- Small fan mounted on the pcm box for extra cooling
- LoTek gauge pod with Prosport water /oil temp and Prosport mechanical vacuum/boost gauge
- Racing Beat gauge pod with Prosport oil pressure and air/water intercooler temp gauges
- 18X9.5 Enkei RPF1s wrapped in Hoosier R6 tires
- KWV3 coilovers - soon to be mated with even stiffer springs
- Racing Beat anti-roll bars with endlinks
- Mazdaspeed front strut bar with master cylinder brace

Work in progress:

- Completely gutting the car
Windows deleted...safety net installed
Sunroof deleted
All interior, carpet, seats, airbags, audio, wiring harnesses
Dash delete

- FULL race cage nose-to-tail
We are doing something a little different with this cage...not your average GT style car cage
We are going to tie this cage all the way from the front bumper to the trunk with a estimated a 12pt design
Running the cage through the whole car will make a huge difference in stiffness as well as safety

- Sparco EVO II racing seats with 6pt harnesses (thanks Marcos)

- Sparco suede steering wheel with custom short hub and quick detach (thanks Marcos)

- Custom alumalite splitter w/ tie rod adjustment (will take the place of the undertray)

- Custom straight-pipe exhaust...deleting the Racing Beat catback for a lighter straight pipe
We will have to see how loud it is and possibly add a resonator/muffler to pass the dB requirement (120dB)
Planning on dumping the exhaust out the side right in front of the rear wheel

- APR GTC-200 wing mounted to the chasis (thanks Scott)

- Vented front/rear wheel arches

- AiM MXL data aquisition logger

- Koni 2812 competition coils mated with Swift springs

- 4.77 diff

- Trans/diff cooling system

- Upgraded bored out oil coolers...replaced OEM 7 line oil system to simpler 3 line

- Ron Davis radiator & fan system

- Custom CAI box with induction hole
& short RAM air system

- Carbon fiber roof

- Lexan windshield, rear window, and quarter panels

- JEGS 15gal fuel cell, fuel pump, and billet oil pressure regulator

- Racing master/slave cylinders

- New paint scheme...Competition Orange (from the Boss 302) with black accents

- LOTS of aero work
still in the designing/development stage...
front grille delete
wheel arch vents
custom front splitter
custom rear diffuser
custom molded sideskirts
custom molded underbody aero
hood aero/louvers to push cool air through the engine bay and pull warm air out

the car is mostly stripped inside now besides the dash but, I would really like to lose that too
EVERYTHING that can go is going and there is much more weight to be lost than we originally thought
can anyone think of ANYTHING that HAS to stay in the car so as not to disable it...radio, top dash display strip, anti-theft, gauge cluster (speedo/tach/dummy gauges)???
and if it can be gotten rid of, how so?
even if it has to stay we will still be making a custom dash for it

Is it tuned on a COBB? If so and you went another direction could you get rid of more of that stuff?

any stand alone system would be far to expensive
ideally that would be the way to go
the ability to bypass everything would be great but, I don't have the resources and don't know anyone that woud feel confident in doing so

I am just curious if you could get what you are looking for out of something like the Adaptronic or Mazdaedit.

Well, you need the canbus to stay intact. The cluster as well unless you plan on running a AIM display, etc. But most of the dash can stay in place, it weighs nothing honestly. Just get rid of the HVAC, etc.
