Talking Is supercharger a good choice for renesis

Hey...new to Rx8..want major hp upgrade...went to local Mazda specialist who recommended not to do forced induction on renesis motor...said it would lead to major engine problems....

Is this true from past experiences...if so, I will stay N/A..

opinions....much appreciated

Like anything it just has to be done right to be reliable.

There is risk in boosting any engine of course. Really good tuning and a high quality installation are essential for reliability.
Also, turbo charging is more efficient than supercharging due to the properties of rotary exhaust and how turbo chargers recover energy from heat in a well designed system.
Make sure you budget for the reliability upgrades

All engines die, the question is, Can you afford for yours to die while you own it?

Your 'specialist' is sadly misniformed regarding FI. Like an NA engine, longevity depends on how you drive it. If you runit ***** to the firewalll everytime you go out,, N/A or F/I doesn't make a difference, you're eventually going to kill both motors, arguably the F/I first because of the extra stress on the motor.

THAT BEING SAID: properly set up, an F/I motor sees no more strain that an N/A motor, and depending on the tune, is arguably going to run slightly richer, therefore slightly cooler. When you're just driving aroung and the intake is a vacuum, there's no difference between NA and FI. Only when you spool up and pressurize the intake do start to strain the motor more than N/''A. But then, If you wanted a moped, you'd buy one w9uldn't you?

I drive my s/c'd car just like I drove it NA; it's nice to have that extra kick in the *** when when I want/need it. Finally, ask your "Mazda Specialist" if NA was so great, Mazda had an replacemenet program for the motors.

Make your choice and live with it. When my motor hits 7500 rpm in 3rd gear, it's like heroin to the ears, not to mention a kick in the pants. Theres something about rotories that piston engines can't match - I have a Stillen on my Xterra, and while it's a huge improvement on an already great motor, it doesn't have the soul on boost that the 13 B has.

apologies for reviving this thread. what reliability upgrades (besides BHR coils) do you recommend for supporting s/c?

There is an entire thread dedicated to owners of the Pettit system. Anything and everything has been covered there.

Superchargers have a lot of friction & inertia drag (read: HP consumption). This tends to make them less favorable than a turbo for small displacement high revving engines.

And turbos require a lot of complex exhaust plumbing, hold a lot of heat in the engine bay, require complex wastegate management, and people who use them are so embarrassed they ususally cover their heads with bags.

It's true.

LOL!!!

6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other?

The thing I like about superchargers is the simplicity and the constant known boost.

Turbo's will make more power if done right, but they are basically a more complex system and harder to maintain.
Meh... to each his own.

Me --if i could this power level NA--I would go for that in a heartbeat.

Hey I have exactly the same question. Suppose I buy a good twin screw supercharger and put it on an 8 (after street port, and all other life sustaining mods on a reni), would we see a reliable horse gain? (im talking 290hp+) Im also interested in examples of supercharged renis.

Thanks
