There is a guy here locally selling an RX-8 head unit but he doesn't know if it is Bose or what firmware version but it says MP3 on the front (which my Bose 04' HU does not). Is there anyway I can find out what firmware version it is without plugging it in? Also how do I tell if its a Bose unit?

to tell what version his is, tell him to hold the "text" and "1" button at the same time for a second with the key on car off. it will show what version it is.
also just look at his top dash and look if there is a speaker in the middle, then its bose. or um. if the corner speakers are there. and say bose. its really quite obvious.
Mine doesn't say MP3, but I do have the Bose system

He said he doesn't want to plug the unit in.... so I'm guessing the HU is already out of the car.
Yeah guys the headunit is already out of the car, Can I tell by the year? Mine is a Bose too and does not say MP3 on it. Oh, I need firmware 9.55 or higher so I can run an Ipod interface.
what am saying is that the non bose didnt come with a factory option of mp3. so if it DOES say mp3 it IS bose. Sure, you can have bose and not have mp3 or 6disc.
I didnt realize it was out of the car, no way to tell if its not in the car. I have a headunit with 6disc changer that is 9.67 and one with single disc thats 9.67 for sale if you need one
I called teh parts department and he said they cannot tell the firmware version by the part number and that the factory ipod adapter works with any firmware
this is the pic he sent me of the unit, I requested more pics. I think this might just be the player itself and not the whole headunit.
I'm trying to get a head unit with firmware 9.55 or higher and the guy had that item listed as a head unit but it's just the player. I don't want to mess with mailing my head unit off either.
