NJ Carpc Usb Issue

Ok...building a carpc and the issue that im running into is I don't have enough USB ports. I figure that I'm going to need 13 or more ports to accommodate everything. The motherboard comes with 4 (Epia mini itx pd)...

does anyone know of a good reliable self powered 10-13 port usb 2.0 hub, or a better solution?

Thanks
Keith

How do you need so many USB ports? Most of the common usb hubs are 7-ports and will require power.

Some can draw power from the hub to pc port....

Was thinking about this one...that supports self-powered mode
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817364021

I need to power:

A GPS reciever
Bluetooth dongle
usb DVD
Car2PC
(the lilliput monitor needs one)
card reader
ODB2
3g adapter (might just use iphone)
WebCam
WiFi
maybe a USB TVtuner (cant find a centrafuse plugin.)
and want to run some extra usbs through the car for usb keys and such.

once you start adding multiple devices to a USB hub you will need power for it. Its not hard get power for the hub. A mac mini is a popular choice, it has 5 usb ports, built in bluetooth & wi-fi, a DVD drive. With the change to DTV, a in car TV tuner becomes more of a challenge. But with a Mac Mini & a 7 port hub you will have 11 ports in total.

Thanks! Yeah, I think that might be the answer if i don't have to add power to it. Wondering if I can plug most of the things in ti with out running power to it.

My Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is same unit.
3G GPRS is via my phone link to CarPC with BT.

Now, you can save 2 spots.

You may connect other stuff like GPS, OBDII via by too, but not recommended.
There is too many bug reconnecting those devices after stand-by.
But BT keyboard works great.....

Also , there is a Card Reader & USB combo or Card Reader & iPhone dock, which might work for you.

Sorry, in most case, the answer is no.

Unless, you plug a lot of LED light or other devices that do not need data transfer to PC.
In this case, it works.

i was looking at a few hubs at staples on my lunch break...how can i power a unit that uses 5v with a 12v car...The only thing i can think of is a dc/ac converter...but that makes for a bulky install...

any suggestions?

12v. DC> 5v. DC adapter.
There are plenty of them.

Also be aware that some of your addon items are going to be using usb->serial conversion software, and they really REALLY hate playing nice with each other on the same USB root hub. So you may be better off with three 4 port hubs. Devices that usually don't get along on the same root would be your touchscreen controls, GPS dongle, and data logger.

about the tv tuner .... its probably useless now since all television stations switched to Digital signal
usb tv tuners so far only receive analog

Ya. I don't think you'll use half of this. I am building (actually built) the main carpc for my 8 and I have a little nothing keyboard, wifi, car2pc, monitor, and some extra ports I ran to the console for whatever. Honestly, you won't use half the stuff you listed. I think your best best is to get a 7 port hub, and then run 1 or 2 10' usb extenstions to the console and use them as needed, just like the front ports on a computer.

My mobo had 2 to begin, I went on newegg and bought these little PCI mounted usb slots that go in the mobo pins, took them out of the PCI slot and just attached them to the mobo back, that little metal plate that has the cut-outs for the ports (VGA, usb, all that). So I now have 4 ports that go straight into the computer. I may get a hub, but it's best to avoid hubs, esp if you have to power them. Just another hazard/problem.

just my .02

i had all those listed above with the exception of a tv tuner on my carpc and never ran into usb conflicts or standby issues.

the only thing is that occasionally the obd2 interface would require more power, therefore bringing up a windows "usb overload" bubble.. never affected it any other way though.
