o.k. I have read that the NON-BOSE units has 5x8's in the front doors?? Is this true, and IF SO, couldn't you just drop in some 5x8's from a company such as polk or mb quart?

Yep I dropped in Polk DB series front and back and they sound great. I used the old method of applying a 9 volt battery applied to the old speakers to get polatity right. If the speaker bumps out that is correct and + on the battery is the + lead to the new speakers if the speaker sucks in reverse the battery on the speaker to find the + wire.

I put 61/2's in, there is a huge cutout, and I just cut a piece of wood to mount, took 30 mins, no prob.
