Talking Strange: US models want to look like Japs. Japs want to look like you too!

The world is an amazing place.... japan car wants US products!

I was reading the HyperRev magazine and I found a paragraph under "Information corner RX-8"

(poor and rough translation) "...... as most owners want to change the aero (kit), intake & exhaust, wheels parts, would it be cool to change to look like an overseas model?"

... SPI from Osaka have 3 oversea model parts that you can order or over securly from the internet"

The 3 items are:

1. Fog - stock rear bumper's (one point dose shape)? (...^^" japan8 help)... is most suited, rear fog light from the European model car. 10290 Yen
2. Wrinker?! (or Blinker)
USA model use this front side marker lamp. Japan model clear parts can be changed to ORANGE. 14715 Yen
3. Sun Blinder
USA model sun blinder. 38325 Yen.

The link to SPI is http://www.south.ne.jp/~spiosk/parts/rx7.htm
Click on the first 4 links to see the picture of product sold.

Since ALL of you form the US change your car to Clear Corners... why don't you sell yours to the Japanese???

Once again the world is an amazing place. Japan thinks orange corner is cool!

I'm afraid of the shock I would receive if I ever visit Japan. I always here how the big celebrities sell products like crazy over there but won't here because they're afraid of "selling out." I just might never look at some of my favorite actors again if I saw that. haha

I dunno... kinda old news maybe. You don't see them too often now. Although I do remember this really stupid Toyota commercial with Meg Ryan... "Navi Navi dingo!" Trust me... I feel dumber for having been subjected to it.

Taka... I remember seeing what you're talking about in passing, but it might take me a little to find the page. Could you give me a page number?

Quick, somebody set up an exchange program with the Japanese to swap the corner markers!!

That way everybody only pays for shipping and everybody wins!

On 2nd thought, I think I'm going to keep my orange side markers since the Japanese think it's cool now. :D

Right - once everyone in Japan has orange, we'll be seeing people wanting orange back since that's what they use in Japan..

Find this all amusing.

Can't see why anyone would want to replace the clear with orange... but think I suppose it makes the car different.

The red especially doesn't suit the orange lights. Looks funny when i see the pics, as the european cars are all clear too.

Wonder why they went for orange in the US, is it a federal requirement or something?

I think so. Not certain for all states, but orange side markers seem to be mandated for US spec vehicles. The RX-8's front headlight cluster doesn't extend enough to be seen from the 3 quarters rear view. I frankly don't see the logic behind it since the RX-8 is not a long car.

For the US, the corners are always on at night and functions only as markers. In Japan and Europe, I believe they are not markers (not on at night) but function as turn signals only. You can tell by some Japanese photos where headlights are on but the corners aren't.

So if you want a true JDM conversion, I think you need to rewire the corners to act as blinkers.

What are the laws here with clear corners? I was getting out of my dad's 03 Grand Am GT and noticed there were no corners at all on front and back I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter between orange and clear but aren't we supposed to have one or the other?

Federal regulation for vehicles sold in the US is that they have to have a amber reflector at the front corner and a red reflector at the rear corner as well as a rear facing red reflector. These can be integrated into the headlight/taillight assembly (like your Grand Am, or the RX-8's tail), they can be a separate light (like the RX-8 front corner, Porsche 911, etc), or can even just be a little reflector with no light (some BMWs, FD RX-7 rear facing reflector).

Most states adopt these federal regulations for how a vehicle can be modified and still be legal, so clear corners are technically illegal in most states. A few states have their own modification regulations that don't specify amber reflectors.

I'm confused by the rear fog light. They advertise the european version. What is different between the European and JDM parts? (I have the JDM rear fog light on my car, and don't see any obvious differerence in the picture...) Perhaps the European ones are a darker red?

Check the motor vehicle laws for your state. For example, in Virginia the law states that if the car has running lights, they must be either amber or white (so clear corners are legal here.)
