I was wondering if anyone had the original CAD designs for the RX-8. If so, please let me know. I'm also a major in graphics design, I would like to mess around with the CAD file and design a new aero kit which I would submit to production depending on how it turns out.
Having a hard time getting my hands on that file

Im pretty sure thats classified Mazda design information that they wouldnt give out to ordinary people, and probably it wouldnt even be let out of R&D room. Tons of dedicated hours of the design team was put into the design, and not to mention thousands of dollars were spent into the final CAD design for the RX-8 to just give out to people to copy and mess with. Besides that, Im also sure its copyrighted and protected from being let out the public. Its basically like asking for the blue print to designing a product. Fat chance you'll get :p .

really? that's like industrial espionage, that's like stealing entire classified design files and blueprints from the giant corporation, and i'm pretty sure that's quite illegal. i doubt you'll get it :D in fact, i'm sure you won't. you'll probably find someone who made a cad model of RX-8 themselves
Before the thread gets closed or anything I should probably better delete it.
Shouldn't have posted this in first place I guess
But netherless there is a 1% chance that I could get my hands on it and if it should happen, I'll be using it only for myself. All I want are the 100% correct messurements of any aspect of the 8 so I can start designing aero parts.
All the other aftermarket companies make the body kits and what not already. I doubt they would have the original Cad designs, but couldnt you just do what they probably do and take measurements or something? I used to co-op at honda and they always had cad-design specs for parts of the cars, which could have been easily printed out and taken home or what not (probably not legally), so if you have a friend who works at Mazda, maybe they could hook you up:-D

If you already have an 8, just do what any company wanting to evaluate their competitor does - digitize it yourself. Or just get a 1/18 scale model to work with - after all, if you're doing aero parts, you're going to want to do extensive wind tunnel testing before and after to quantify the aero improvements your parts will provide, right? Right? (Otherwise, stick to truth in advertising and just call them appearance parts).

Gordon

you are so right and I stand corrected. I'm out for appearance parts, I just thought aero parts would be the proper term.
I have no way testing anything in a wind tunnel and I'm not out to create something that will be used for racing or anything... I just want to put my skills to use and make my car unique, ya know
The reason why I'm not doing it myself is simple: Why reinvent the wheel unless I have to? My Mazda dealer told me I should get my hands on that file for the purpose I'll be needing it for. I hoped on his suggestion and made a thread, that's what this is all about.
