HELP- Hit and Run, Bumper Damage

Ok so this has been an AWFUL weekend. Friday night/ Saturday morning i was the victim of a hit and run. This gave me about an 8 inch wide dent on the rear bumper on the drivers side. So I am asking the forum to help me on what I should do now... I initially have 2 ideas- First being to remove the bumper, bang out as much of the dent as i can then take it to a auto body place and get them to bondo it and paint the bumper. Another idea is to find an inexpensive aftermarket bumper. I would really appreciate any insight or ideas from the forum. I am trying to be as cost conscientious as possible. Oh and i have an insurance deductable of $500.00 so i dont think that will help much. I will try to post pics later today. I really appreciate any help and ideas.--Cole

ouch - im very sorry to hear about your luck.

Do you have full coverage insurance? or just Liability. I say take it in first and see how much you get quoted to fix it back to normal.... and then just see.

If you have the money... (depending on your deductible) the best option might get insurance to pay for whatever they will and drop a little money on top of it for a genuine mazdaspeed bumper?

Sorry to hear that, I got one exactly the same spot as you do and the worst is the tail light was damaged too but the body was good. Just the bumper and the tail light.

Luckly me, the guy waited me to confess his mistake. He waited for an hr for me while I was eating in the restaurant. THe price for the repair is $2200 CDN. I don't know what the US repair shop charge you. But this should help you for your reference.

Good luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the knockoff MS rear bumper is just the bottom half, and not the whole bumper. So even if you were to get that, the damage would still be there.

IMHO, since your car's exterior is stock, I would just go with getting it fixed, or getting a used (good condition) rear bumper off Ebay and getting it repainted. Any other aftermarket bumper would be lower than the factory, and it would look funny unless you had the sides and front also.

The only way you fix it for under $500 if you can find a used bumper w/ the same color. Getting stuff painted is not cheap, knockoff MS bumper go for $300 to $450 w/ out paint.

I dont have any expereince with fake mazdaspeed parts but I would reccommend to ANYONE on ANY topic the universal rule of "you get what you pay for". You might find some place to get it from but 1) it might not fit 2) it might be warped or otherwise damaged 3) the paint will most likely suck. I myself am operating on a tight budget recently due to the theft of a computer and having to unexpectedly drop 3K out of nowhere for a new one (for work)

IF you do want to go the MS Bumper route - i can promise you the little money you save by going knock off will come back to bite you in the *** somehow later.

You should check to see if you have Uninsured Motorist Propert Damage coverage on your policy. In a lot of states that will cover hit and run damages....
