Aem power gains , loses and tuning
Hey guys I'm after a few educated opinions basically the tuning scene over here in the uk is very young and only a couple places do it but one in particular is claiming the Aem cai is restricting the 8,s full potential so I was wondering if anyone else has heard this as I haven't read anything here and u guys have been tinkering with you wankles a lot longer then us and might have some clue what there on about.

The argument isnt that they cause a restriction, the problem is the bore size of the intake being bigger than stock ... a schoolboy mistake! unless you let the MAF/ ECU know your running a bigger intake tube it doesnt know.
so the maf gives the false readings, the ECU opens and closes the injectors acordingly, the front O2 censor tells the ECU its running lean, the ECU adds more fuel, the maf gives false readings, the ECU cals fuel injection accordingly, the front O2 sensor ... and round it goes ....
its true! dont take it from groupb shifty, ask pettite for some of there data logs from cars running AEM's ... fuel/ air ratio is all over the place particullay at full throttle and under high load conditions

haha ... there are plenty of the people in the uk taht run them with no complaints too! i havnt nipped on here to cause an argument just thought id give the reasoning behind groupbs findings before they got shot down by all the AEM nutz with no hard evidence much like what is and has happened on the OC ... you know as well as i do shify i aint exactly groupb's biggest fan myself but what they have found here, regards the AEM is pretty uniform with the finding of the other big tuners around the world!
thats not to say it cannot be made to work its just a case of re-calibrate the Maf scaling table, which takes time and will do little real good
i think the argument that is brewing up is more to do with the fact that your paying a lot of money for something that is no better than stock (which is very very well made!) and if it is any better were talking about bhp increses of 1 or 2 ... bearing in mind the cheapest you can buy and AEM intake for the 8 in teh UK is around £250 ($396) and the Revi is £320 ($506) without the RAM £200 ($316)

I don't think anyone thinks the Aem will give them a real boost in ponies me included same with nearly all performance parts it just bothers me with some/all specialists either have there preferred brand or there own which they tend to push and any other parts are substandard and there not being attacked by Aem nuts enfact a couple guys who commented don't own one but they like me seem to find it strange that these suckers have been around for a fair few years and group b are the first to have issues not to say there not valid just seems odd so I thought I'd ask here see if there is any further input as there isnt on the uk site other then unfounded opinions for and against

Just take a look at the datalogs, 'nuff said.
Aem without maf recalibration works just fine, of course a tune helps improve the results.
It wouldn't surprise me, given the huge quantity of crappy serviced rx8s in the uk that the ltft\stft problems were there for a bunch of other reasons.

Well we'll soon find out once and for all i put 1 on mikes (bulldogs) car that i stumbled upon in a car that i sold a couple of weeks since (sounds amazing with the HKS catback) were taking it to groupb (or another roling road carnt remmeber the company :-/) for a dyno run in the next week or 2, hes had 2 dynos now with pretty uniform results and after the run we've been allowed a bit of time to wiz it back off the car and put the stock intake back on to go back on the RR at no extra cost so we'll be able to come to a final and complete conclusion as to the effects of teh AEM on the 8
id quite like to see groupb proven wrong too but having heard the same findings found by petite and RB ill not be surprised either way

What's the point of modifying a car that's driven in stop and go traffic?
The intake length isn't much of a restriction in our case, bends may reduce the positive effects which are, anyway, present.
The ideal intake setup sees an intake manifold mutilated of the ssv and with 4 velocity stacks, airbox right before it and a pipe that draws air from the other opening in the front chassis section (where some IC pipes go).
Too bad the car becomes a huge pile of crap to drive below 5k rpms in this case, lol.

i have a question pertaining to the tuning...I found a reputable shop to take my car to. they definitely do NOT specialize in rotaries but they have tuned 3 8's and turboed one of them. I'm looking to have them put on an AEM along with a few other things and the guy i talked to said he remembered tuning to be a MOTHER on the turbo with an aem intake. or so he thought it was an AEM, he wasn't quite sure. Anyways do you think it will really be that hard for these guys to tune my car to the intake and the existing RB exhaust i have? NOTE: although they dont work with many rotaries, they are VERY competent tuners with domestics here in the U.S. thanks for any info.

Basically the chap on the UK oc who was having the trouble has since updated his progress and after a bit of tinkering they figured it out and it only cost a single BHP but im sure after a bit more time and experience it can be tuned with positive results on bhp

What is his comparison based against though? It is not a terrible intake, but not the best either IMO.
I am pulling the best NA numbers high and low that I have ever seen with my new custom box, which was based on several years experience trying ever possible tube and box configuration I could think of or otherwise had seen or heard about.
