I picked up some drain plugs and washers today from a Mazda dealer in Vancouver and wanted to get the diff and tranny fluid from them as reccomended here but they told me they only have it in bulk barrels and they get it from petro Canada(a gas station for those not familiar) What's a cold Canadian supposed to do when he can't find OEM or Redline up here?

They have Redline at Mopac for sure. Did you try Lordco? If you arent in a huge hurry I can get it for you.....PM me 😊

This thread is aimed at the manual trans fluid change.Just wondering if any one has done a DIY on the rx8 automatic starting with the 4 speed automatic.There is only one hole on the autoimatic to drain and fill from.You need a pump.I bought a simple hand pump in the top out the bottom.

Does any one have a automatic DIY for the rx8?.

Just wanted to come back and say i did the drop the pan method on my 04 automatic today.It wasn't that hard just a little messy.I used 5.7 quarts. I was able to reuse my gasket, just added a little tv black. I pulled the screen filter and cleaned it out with contact cleaner.I will do this one more time in two weeks and the fluid should be pretty clean.Tranny already responds better.

Does any one know how much gear oil goes in the differential in my 2004 rx8 automatic?. I have been trying to uncover America's best kept secret lol and so far noda , zilch , zip, zero,bupkis???.

Found it kind of odd that in a thread about rear differential , no one mentions how much gear oil is needed or how much any one put in? It would be nice to know how much to buy for a drain and fill?.

I clicked the link in the first post and didn't read it to well your self because if you had looked, all that is there is a picture with a fill and drain plugs?, that sir is not a diy and further there is no answer to my question of how much gear oil do i use in the diff just a picture.

I did find out last night though and the amount of gear oil is 1.5 quarts give or take. The funny part of this and once again you act the child by not just saying 1.5 quarts instead of dishing out your surley *** hat special, who looks silly now .

So for all and any who do not need the BS , the amount is 1.5 quarts. Try being a little more friendly and resist the temptation to be rude and an *** hat. I wrote this so that all who visit here be ware! this place is a wealth of information but you will pay a price for the information, this is why i only come here occassionally because of surly people like tyhe *** hat above. I was warned that these idiot types are here because theyb have no life at all out side this rx8 club. That's why he didn't just say 1.5 quarts because he must collect his political currency to make him self feel good at the expense. If you sir are not an *** hat then answer why you didn;t just say 1.5 quarts, there is no reason on earth to be nasty and childish, some of are real adults and evidenced by your behaviour , you are not an adult, no worry there is hope for genetic short commings.

It's real simple. 'Ya remove the drain plug and let it all drain out. 'Ya reinsert the drain plug and fill it through the top hole till it overflows. 'Ya replace the top plug and 'yer done. Ya might wanna wipe off any excess gear oil.

I know this thread's been dead for a while, but I have a quick questions!

Looking into changing both the diff and tranny oil, and have seen what seems to be 2 different products, Redline MT90, and 75W90 for each change, respectively.

So a quick search on Amazon turns up this product:

Which seems to be both in one. Can I just use this for both changes?

It's recommended to use GL-4 lube in the transmission and GL-5 in the differential.

I've used both Redline and Royal Purple over the years but have recently found Ford Motorcraft pure syntehtic gear lube to be superior in performance to all others. No, I don't work for Ford.

I've just finished installed my new transmission. It works! I drove it down the street. Then when i went to put it into reverse the shift stick locked me out now it wont go no where except drive and neutral! I can manual put the tranny into reverse, drive, park, and all but I cant do it with the shift stick connected!?!?! Anyone know how to fix this? It's a 2004 RX8. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2004 rx8 GT bought it used and not sure when the last time the diff and tranny fluid was replaced and if it was what was used. Is using the synthetic replacement fluids safe to do so? My 8 is at 131k miles.

I use a carburetor facet square 12v fuel pump to pump oil from the bottle to the tranny. It works great.

You can also use the $7 Plews hand pump at Amazon. I have several that I use over the past few years for all my fluid changes requiring elevation. Works great.

I'm sure the FoMoCo is better. But I cannot tell any difference from the factory or dealer prep fill for the MT fluid change. MT fluid change from factory/dealer at ~ 44K miles to MT90. MT90 was convenient and cheap.

After a refill with MT90, I found the shift action a bit 'syrupy' - the shifter put up just a little more resistance to being moved.

I drained a little and added maybe 20/25% MTL, which is much lighter. Snickety shifts restored!

Of course, it may be the temperatures that mine sees, so thicker may be OK for you 'tropical' owners.

So far so good.

I don't find MT90 any different than the OEM stuff in terms of shifter feel. Still kinda rubbery and stubborn in the winter. Over the years, I've mixed in MTL but have since run full MTL. The shifting feel in all conditions is now what an RX8 should be in the first place. Very smooth and confident engagements.

Before I do this, I want to be sure. Should I buy 2 QT's or 3 QT's for this? I know the transmission takes 2.06 QT's? Or is that for the S2 only? Also, outside of a GL-5 rated oil for the diff, anyone recommend or suggest to stay away from any type of oils?

Hi everybody, newbie owner second-hand 05 auto (yes, I know auto). I have a decent idea on replacing my own transmission fluid and filter (trans pan removal). I assume I need a completely new gasket for this job and an afternoon on the internet suggests ready made ones are either not done or scant to come by. Can this just be cut out of gasket stock material or is there anything special about it? any links or further info muchly appreciated.

also sorry if this is either covered elsewhere or I'm in the wrong forum. (like I said newbie).

You are not supposed to use gL5 in your transmission it's supposed to be for the diff if you research or read a bit you'll see gl4 is what's used for transmission gl5 has chemicals in some that will mess ur car up
