DIY: TB by-pass/in-line coolant filter
hi boys&girls, and tuners and enthusiasts alike.
i have done a TB coolant by-pass and read up on here of someone who already has a DIY on it. but i'd like to add to it, as this seems to be old news, but my version came across an upgrade by stroke of luck.
i guess the picture/procedures are the same as in the thread "no more detonation:miac", so follow that...mine's differ in the following.
-$3 small autozone fuel filter
NOTE: do not use MR. Gasket's universal glass in-line fuel filter! i know how nice it looks, but it'll break when doubled to use as a coolant filter from vibration...or even just the heat from the fluid! so absolutely NO GLASS type FUEL FILTER of any kind.
and here's basically what you'll need, same as rotaryinsider's steps.
- (2) 5/16 vacuum caps $1.99 pk of 4
- (2) spring clamps or screw type hose clamps...( not necessary, as you can use the factory ones on the electronic throttle body.) $1
- any corrosion resistant fluid. i.e. brake fluid, coolant, even oil. fill the old ETB coolant passage with some of this fluid to prevent rust for future use, or ease of returning to factory form upon dealership inspection.
procedures: just remove the 2 hoses on the ETB and plug in the lower hose as your inlet to the filter, and the top hose as your outlet.
NO CUTTING of the ETB coolant hoses are necessary, depending on the length of the fuel filter you got.
mine was about 2 1/2 inch...and that seemed enough too roll the coolant tubes over and cleverly tucked away underneath. the filter body diameter was 1 1/4 inch iirc.
enjoy!

Would have been kind of you to post the link to the other thread you are talking about.
Since your's is different, pictures would have been nice too. Otherwise, why not just post your "mod" in the original DIY thread?

i'm so sorry so-sonic.
i'm not very suave when things comes to computers... thats why i was very thorough with my thread. and getting pics up from me....ppfffffft, fogettabouttit...it'll take me ages.
besides, this mod is already old for me. and is older news on the forum threads... so getting NEW pictures up and procedures just simply means taking everything apart and putting it together again just for one person.
- go to "no more detonation: MIAC" thread in the discussion forum... look for the link posted by oldrotor??? it'll go to a step-by-step PICTURED procedure by rotaryinsider i believe.
thats as far as i can help you... just remember what i instructed in here for the install of the fuel filtro.
enjoy

back from earlier...
sosonic, it looks like... a tiny metal filter tucked away between the alternator and the TB. its quite hard to get a clear pic....and even more trouble for me to take one and fuss with the computer to upload it.
sorry if this was an inconvenience for you. BUT, this mod is no different than the old TB by-pass mod in terms of procedure. it can't get any harder.
i really hope this doesn't cramp you up or stop you from doing the mod.

btw sosonic,
i don't pay much attn to the water temp gauge... as it behaves about the same for the short while that i've studied on my drive. but, the oil temp gauge (RB gauge kit) has been consistently showed me approx. a drop of about 7degrees...
on freeway drives, it usually gets 182 on 55ambient temp. now it runs near 175degree for oil.
it seems like a worthwhile mod. though now i hear a slightly more pronounced fluid noises in the cabin... but i can live with it.
noises are noises... but functionality of the mod is there. so do only one mod at a time to isolate other noises out.
my car is also rather quite new (6k miles) so i have to get used to the usual noises it produces when i push it hard.
just thought i provide some inside tips so no-one would be like "wtf?" when they play around with their car.
