No warning light (and the light is functioning) but very sporadic operation of the PS, which is worse than having none at all in my opinion.

The problems started about 2 weeks ago, and have been becoming more frequent as time goes by. The primary problem is that the power steering really doesn't want to come "off center" when it goes bad, so changing lanes is a rather sketchy thing right now, as I never know if I will have power steering or not when I move the wheel off canter.

For the last couple weeks I have been trying the "Manual Calibration" technique of turning the ignition to accessory, cranking the wheel all the way to the right, then all the way to the left, and then starting the car. This seems to work in most cases (at least for a short time) but today it stopped helping.

So... I pulled up this thread, pulled out the air box and cleaned and treated the connections as indicated in the top of the thread. On first re-assembly, after cleaning, the PS warning light was on, and I had no power steering at all.

So I took it back apart and tried again, and now the warning light is back off, but the power steering is still sporadic in its assist. It is better than it has been in the last week, but still hesitant to come off center when I start to turn.

I checked the U joint and it seems ok, and there does not seem to be any binding issues.

I guess the next step is to go ahead and replace the wiring harness... but I thought I would go ahead and post what I had done so far, and what was occurring, and see if anyone had any other suggestions.

-Someone on here said that owning an RX-8 with over 110,000 miles was like being married to a stripper... and I am starting to agree. Since 110,000 (two months ago) I have had an O2 sensor fail, the power steering fail, and a serious degradation in braking.

I hope I am not just seeing the tip of the iceberg here. My last car was a 1990 Integra, and when I sold her to the teenager next door she had 525,000 miles on her, and he is still driving her.

-Shadow
sounds like your angle sensor on the input shaft to the rack is faulty, the wiring to the ES controller or the controller itself and not really related to the common "no power steering" problem which is just faulty power connections to the rack.

I had the light going on and off about 5 month ago for like a week, I found this thread and followed the instruction, a couple days later the light when off and i been having power steering since. 2 weeks ago i took the car to a shop thats rebuilding the engine, i got it back tuesday 4/9/13, while driving around on Wednesday i took two corners hard then stopped at destination and turned off the car, i turned on 5 minutes later and the light was on and no powersteering. Got home and 3 hours later when i turned on the car the light was off and i had powersteering again. But while driving, if i turned right it was smooth like normal, if i turn left it was hard. Like if it had powersteering on the right side, and no powersteering on the left side. (weird huh?)...

I was kind of scare driving like that so i unplugged the two connectors under the intake and now i dont have powersteering. I will clean them again today and see what happens. What do you think it is?

I hit a curb about a month ago and during the repair process my power steering failed. The dealership said I need a new power steering rack and pinion and new power steering control module(also they said they called mazda usa and that was their recommendation).

So the insurance company agreed with the dealership that to power steering failure was due to the accident , so now my car is totaled (because they quoted $4k to fix it).
I have the car back now and I'm trying to figure out if it really needs a new rack and pinion along with the power steering ecu or if it could be something else...

I have cleaned all connectors, that didn't work. I replaced the harness and now the power steering won't work from a cold start, but if you let it get to full operating temp and the shut it off and turn it back on again it will work. If the car sits for more than 5/10 minutes you have to let it run for a few minutes and then shut it off and turn on again to get it back on. I was thinking it is temperature related but
Could it be related to voltage?

Any ideas would be really appreciated.

I spoke too soon!!!

After fixing the power steering issue with this DYI, my check engine light came on! Maybe I hit something in the engine or a connection? Any suggestions?

Did you plug everything back in? Can you pull the code? That would probably direct you where to look.

If you say the once your car gets to operating temps, your EPS starts to work, which means your module and the EPS rack works. You have three choices, two of those you have done so you're left out with hard wiring(soldering the connections) the harness. Before you do that, check your electrical connections for continuity with an volt/ohmmeter.

The power steering will not have anything to do with your CEL. You will have to have your CEL read.

Thank you very much for the reply. Just out of curiosity... what about using a conductive paste in the connectors? Has anyone tried that with any success?

Also when soldering the connections do you actually solder the wires onto the plug on the torque sensor? (I didn't see any wires so I wasn't sure how to go about attaching it) Or do people usually solder only the top plug connectors?

Note to all my RHD brethren: in order to get to the torque sensor connector on our cars, you will need to remove the battery box too.

Remove both negative and positive terminals. Loosen battery clamps, unhook and remove. Take out battery. Unclip and remove upper part of battery box. Undo three bolts holding lower portion of box and remove - one bolt in the bottom of the box, two on the left side (might be obscured by the coolant hose).

Just wanted to say, this DIY guide saved my 8 from the power steering light a couple weeks ago.

Another issue that came up for me (most likely not related) was my battery was on it's way out, so I got a new battery off the warranty from O'Reilly's and everything is well so far. But that may be a trigger to the power steering light coming up? who knows.

Splice the plugs and solder the wires together, I've never read anyone mention soldering it on the torque sensor nor use conductive paste, only dielectric grease.

I actually gave the paste a try and it didn't help. I have no powersteering from a cold start, but if I let it warm up and then shut it off and restart it will work fine until I accelerate or stop too quickly, then it shuts off again. I'm going to try soldering the wires together next I guess. I already replaced the harness and cleaned everything 15x, and tried dielectric grease, conductive grease...

I ordered a paste with a property of electrical conductivity, to insert in each female connector.

I gives you new to see if you can reach, in my opinion this is what it takes to settle the problem.

Because even after trying all your stuff, the problem is intermittent.

You may have a loose connection somewhere. I was doing the same thing you are doing now after I had my engine replaced. Cleaned here, cleaned there, pretty much cleaned all connections everywhere. EPS works when I start the car, then once I hit a bump or turn the wheel hard, it stops working.

I tightened the clamp for the battery's positive terminal that has the 60 amp EPS fuse in it because it was loose and bent the contact points(I don't know if that made sense) in all the female ends of the harness for a tighter connection, once clamped together, I used zip ties to keep the connection tight and closed.

I have checked battery connections, I have now soldered the power and torque sensor wires together removing the connectors near the radiator and it is still doing the same thing. No power steering when cold started, restart and it works until I accelerate to quickly or stop to quickly then it shuts off until I restart. I have tried wiggling all the remaining connections (and soldered connections) while it is running and can't get it to shut off. There is a light grinding sound inside the cabin when you turn the steering wheel, but I think it's the plastic. You can't hear anything out side in the engine bay. I really don't know what else to try at this point.

*Edit- Also tried zip-tying all the connections so they can't move or come loose... still no dice.
Also I never mentioned that I have a vented hood and on days that it rains heavily I seem to have much better luck with the power steering working. Also I went from no problems to all these problems after I hit a curb which is starting to make me think the problem may be between the battery and the EPS module.

Guys I have a 2005 5 speed RX8. and few days now I realised that while am turning the steering getting a lil stiffer then normal again. I am pretty sure this is the same problem you guys are experiencing and i don't even think i should go to the dealer coz there are fees for a check up of the problem and I dont have a money tree to make them rich. I believe I can just follow these steps and hopefully get it sorted but as i live in United Kingdom I don't wanna rush and get it done by myself and meet troubles ahead. No just yet. so I am gonna get me some of these Cleaners and wait for my bro in law as they guy knows about cars. he live in London about 150 miles from where i am in Stoke. also any help will be welcom on how I can "DIYly" get my coolant tank or sensor fixed. My dealer asking about $500 (280GBR) to get it done as they say I have to change the coolant bottle alltogether with the sensor. Anyone direct me to the right direction will be a God send as I love my motor. also feel free to add me as a friend coz all you guys really rocks. Peace my brothers and sisters.

Great Post!

Thanks for the DIY post. My power steering malfunction indicator came on and I was planning to take my '04 to the dealer for repairs. I decided to do a little research and found your post. So far, so good. The pictures made it easy to find the connectors to inspect/clean.
