DIY Fuel Pump Housing Removal Video

Had to pull my fuel pump for the second time in two days so I figured I would make a DIY video

If there are any helpful tips feel free to chime in, im not an expert

Figured this could help somebody who is thinking of doing this themselves but doesn't know exactly how much work is in it, its pretty easy if you got the tool to get the ring off,

This tool seems to be working for people, and its decently priced

Car had 175,000 kilometers on it with original fuel pump before I just put this new OEM Arram fuel pump in and all I can say is WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE! My rx8 is the only one I ever driven so it always felt decently fast to me since I purchased it with 133,000 kilometers on it but now it feels like a new car, especially high in the rpm's

Nice job! Thanks for this, I was planning on doing this in the near future for the first time, these video's will help take a lot of the futzing around out of the job. Only thing that might help noobs like me a bit more is to show how you removed/replaced the actual fuel pump from the assembly once its out.

Anyway, thanks again. Pretty awesome you're over 100k miles on the original motor too! Nice work.

If I had the time I would have made the DIY for the actual pump as well but I only had 2 hours before work so I decided to just do the removal and install process but I can tell you replacing the pump is pretty easy, not much can go wrong just make sure the pump goes back in the same way it came out

Yeah im glad my engine is running really strong still!! I really feel I can get quite a few more summers out of this engine

O wow. Just saw how new this post is. Great videos. I'm wondering if this might help my lean code as there are not many other symptoms I can think of.. maybe rear O2? idk... My fuel trim is whack also.

Running catless. Just changed plugs, coils, wires. No vacuum leaks to be found..

What are your long and short term fuel trims at? How many miles on the pump and engine? I didn't get any lean codes when my pump was dying but who knows I might have got one soon if I didn't change it

I don't think rear o2 has anything to do with it but you can unplug it and see how it runs, I drove without a rear o2 sensor for a good 5 months without problems

If your over 60K miles you can get a new OEM pump from BHR for $75

OEM/Arram Fuel Pump Motor | Black Halo Racing

The pump should be good for another 60-100K before another swap :p

If you feel you can do this job and you have over 60k miles on the pump I think its worth while because the pump is cheap and the second ring tool I posted from amazon looks like it should be good for the job and only costs $29. So for little over a hundred bucks and an hour of your time it could potentially make a huge difference like it did for me, or your fuel pump was fine and nothing changes :p but these pumps are notorious for starting to go weak between 60-100k miles

So I'm in the process of replacing my fuel pump. At this point that means waiting for my replacement "union nut" since I broke a bunch of the ribs off of the original by trying to use a cheapo tool I bought at Napa before finding a better one for rent/loan at Autozone (the second one pictured in your original post). The dumb question I have: when you replaced your pump did you also replace the gasket (part #F151-42-A61 I believe)? My mechanic friend is adamant that I should; on the other hand if I don't *HAVE* to spend an extra $50 I could use that money for beer to help with the re-installation process of the pump. Any consensus amongst people here who have done their own fuel pumps?

Hey

Sorry to hear that tool is cheap i read a post where it worked well for somebody, i will note that in the original post.

As for replacement the rubber gasket no thanks, I think most people re-use their's on the rx8 I don't really see a point of replacement it unless you somehow damaged it

Re: the tools - sorry, my wording was not terribly clear! The second one you pictured (the more sturdy looking one) was PERFECT. I had previously bought a different one that was terrible and then ended up using the second one. Only issue with it was it was taller than your custom made one so I had a somewhat limited angle I could work within, but it gripped well and turned the thing after all else failed.

re: gasket - thanks, that matches what I've been inferring from pretty much every writeup I've seen. I'm gonna save myself the $$ and if for some reason it does leak, at least now I know it's not THAT hard to get the thing out with the right tool (and with a lot of silicone spray )
