Ways to improve the stock air intake?

After a long search online I concluded that spending $1200 on an intake and exhaust does not sound a good idea. I am convinced that turbo charging the rx8 is the best way to go. Until this time though I am wondering if there is a way of improving the stock intake, get at least some more noise. I've heard about replacing the stock air filter with a K&N one, take out the lower half intake box, removing baffle walls, and air horn. Anyone has tried something like that? What about the risks if any, of such a modification? Does the protection against dirt/water... decrease when removing the lower half box of the intake?

Do some searching, there's lots of info on this site. Look in the DIY section for stock airbox modifications.

I'll give you just one link and then you need to go find some more yourself.

For the time being untill you get turbocharged you can probably find something cheap of ebay. You can usually find the name brand systems being sold for pretty cheap.

Remove the VFAD, remove one screen, remove baffling, and put a K&N drop in uh... in. This will net you more noise and maybe 1-2hp but nothing tangible.

Don't remove airbox bits - you'll just suck hot air from the radiator!

.......and don't be temted to remove the airhorn or screens, they are there for a purpose - just because you don't know their purpose doesn't make them useless, you can really screw the car up by playing with these pieces, just buy something that is proven to work.
