That is a complicated question and I suggest getting the book linked in the first post of my build thread, that would be a good read for getting a basic understanding of turbocharging.

About $650 in group buys.
Just make sure your RX-8 has DSC, otherwise you will need to jerry rig it to get it to fit.

There have been thousands of those kits sold over the past 7 years, everything has a failure rate and in the case of the BHR kit, it is very low. I have installed a dozen BHR kits at least.
How many of those coils are run at over 9psi boost ? I would wager that if you tested all those coils that you would find a minimum 25% of them wont pass an HEI coil test.

Two are run at over 10psi of boost, the rest are NA with one Pettit build taking place now that has the BHR. I would love to take that bet but seeing as all the cars are running fine right now, that would be a lot of work for nothing.

I've got to the point that anyone I tune for that runs the BHR coils must do a test before we even start . Typically we find one or two that are weak. YMMV

I'm curious, how do they determine if it's weak with the HEI tester? It either fires and the sparks jumps across on the tester if it is healthy or it doesn't.

I won't derail this thread, but just to be clear, are there certain 8s that don't have DSC?
That was Hoss's issue, wasn't it?

Correct .

Doesn't jump=not healthy
Jumps = healthy

The testers that look like a spark plug tend to give results like that ...no grey area .
The ones that just have a big gap to jump can be a little less conclusive as sometimes you get strong vs a weak spark .

The thing is , with the unhealthy ones , you wouldn't even know there was an issue until you try running high boost . So it would never show up on an N/A car.

We just went through this with my HEI tester. Two coils showed good Blue spark, the others showed weaker orange spark.

Ya just have to pay attention closely.

Yes, a lot of people choose the Base Sport 6 speed (No DSC, etc) RX-8's because they are lighter and because most disable the DSC anyway. Pretty much all the autox and track guys I can think of run Base Sports.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that
when I mention the SB kit.

Fwiw, I was very happy with my BHR kit on my NA GT.

That doesn't mean you don't have some weak coils in there ...... you would never know unless you tested them.

Does anyone know of a small turbo kit for the 8 not a big giant top mount bigger then the engine lol because i think something like that would be beneficial for what i want more than massive hp gains something super quick spooling for faster acceleration and a small bump in top speed everything fi seems like go big or go home i dont think i even need 300 hp just want to hit the gas and go quicker
Or can i tune the bigger kits to be super conservitave not break 300 horses and not abuse a stock engine with tremendous power

Did i really? I thought it used a bigger turbo..... so i can go with that one and aim for more reliability then power? But still get wayy better acceleration?

So long as you don't wind up the boost ....absolutely !

Like all turbo setups .... Do your homework , install it properly (see this forum for what you need to do) and get it tuned properly.

Exactly what I looked for when I bought mine in 06. No traction control, no sunroof, no nav, nothing. I'm kind of regretting it to a small point now considering the 20b as my next block. It will be a little wild without the traction control...

Hard to imagine that you could maintain traction control on a swap like that anyway ............
