Is there any way to make the rotary noise louder??

I think the rotary noise in my Rx8 has become much moresubtle and not as loud as itwas as thefirst two weeks I had the car. Maybe I have justgotten used to the soft eeeeeeeeeeeee sound somuch that I dont notice it anymore. You guys know what Im talking about right? The flying saucer noise the engine makes that you can hear when its idle? I want to know if theres any way to make the rotary engine noise a little louder b/c I really love it and makes the Rx8 really stand out. I usuallycant hear it over other cars engines and exhausts at stoplights and not at all while driving. I think taking off the the plastic enginecover will help a little but I dont think that is such a good idea. I hope someone figuresout a way to get the rotary sound to be sharper and louder Id love to makeit more noticeable.

You'll find plenty of sound insulation underneath the dashboard if you have a dig around. Any car would be painfully loud inside without it... the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) engineers work very hard to get the sound just right for the target market.

I think you're talking about the underlying "turbine whine". The rotary is a 4-stroke reciprocating (sort of) engine, so you get the traditional buzz you'd expect, but it also spins, so you get a sort of whistling sound like a turbine (which also spins).

Someone on this board posted their video of their car running around with the Borla exhaust, and in fact you can still hear that cool/weird whine along with the buzz.

Yes Baron I am talking about the whistling noise! Im not talking about exhaust and intake mods guys that wont do anything for the whistling noise. Thosemods will only make it more difficult to hear the whistling noise! Right now its only audible when the car is idle and when the Rx8 first starts up. I want to make it loud and sharp enough for other drivers to look overfrom their cars and say what the hell is that weird noise coming from?? I dont know if its possible to dosomething like this without opening up the engine and making changes to the rotors but I would like to know ifsuch a mod is possible to do. I want to increase the volumeof that whistle noise the Rx8 makesthat sounds like a flying saucer.

Best bet would be to remove the engine cover, followed by the hood :D

if that didn't work . . . the next best thing would be an electrical box to synthesize the sound (like the electrical fake blow off valve for NA car?) :D I'm sure if enough people interested, someone will build and sell them

Aftermarket intakes are usually accompanied by a loud suction-like sound that drowns out the engine.

Well it sounds like theres no realistic way to make it louder. With the car on Ive taken off the engine cover and had the hoodraised but it still wasnt very loud so that wont work. Intake is just going tomake its own loud noise its not going to add to the whistle. And I dontknow why someone said something about taking off cats and putting on mufflersand aheader when noneof that has anything to do with the whistling noise! From what you guysare saying it doesnt looklike any real mod is possible for doing what I want. Too bad b/c this is one mod I really wanted to try to do.

are you talking about that lovely whistle that you get from a sucking supercharger?? throw a turbo or super on the car, and you get real volume on that sucking/whistling sound.

i can imagine the only way would be to add more rotors... and im going to assume that isnt going to be cheap :P the sound of the rotary spinning is well the sound of the rotary spinning, it isnt air being forced out of the car.

Adding another rotorwould be the only way toincrease the sound of the whining? Wow!! Too much work and money just fora cool noise. I dont think the car wouldeven run the same with another rotor added to it.

I can't think of any way to keep the buzzing sound quiet while increasing the sound of the whine...but check out the "speedborla" clip--it really sounds like two engines running at once, a sport bike + a skillsaw/turbine/vacuum cleaner. Listern to the last 1/3 of the clip especially. Yeah, you can still hear the buzz, but notice that you can hear the whine loud and clear...whereas a stock RX8 I don't think you hear anything but buzz if you are standing outside the car.

At any rate you can definitely tell that it's not a usual engine under the hood.
