RX-8 aftermarket exhausts SUMMARY

Add gas, add oil, repeat

Hey all, I've got a 2004 Rx8 1.3L wankle engine with an AEM dryflow intake system on it. I'm looking for a good cat back system to increase power and change the sound.
Been looking into the BORLA touring exhaust and am wondering if that would cause any issues with the exhaust ports on the engine or overheating, plus are there any mods I'd need to make with the fuel management system or ECU once the system is installed?
Any other tips would help, thanks!

Mile High Eight
Swapped out my catpipe for the BHR Resonated mid pipe:
Currently running the Greddy SP Elite, BHR Light Weight Flywheel, and stock intake.
Here is before the swap:
After:
I have a bit of a whistle/high pitched sound after install. I will check for leaks and tighten all the bolt connections.

Stock air box retrofit
I own a very cool 2006 RX8 with some aftermarket performance modifications. i bought it second hand. It came equipped with a Typhoon intake and a K&N air filter. It also has a performance exhaust system. I live in Calgary where winters are cold and summers are warm. It's very dusty here too and dry as a bone. My RX 8 runs great in the winter, pulling in all that dense cold air. However my car runs really poorly in any temperatures above about 15 Celsius. The thing to do I think, is to ditch the K&N filter and buy a stock air box. Does that mean that I have to get rid of the Typhoon and also if I revert back to the stock airbox will my performance exhaust system cause problems?

Your exhaust and your intake don't have any real impact on each other, so no, there is no problem with doing that.
Thumbs up on getting rid of the K&N Typhoon intake, it's the 2nd worst brand name intake out there. Stock is literally better for idle stability, power, emissions, and gas mileage.

When I tested the corksport single exit exhaust, I had to trim my exhaust compression springs (catback to cat connection). I think this is the cause of the exhaust leak. I picked some new ones up at the dealer this week and will get under the car to install today.
I'll let you know if it goes away.

Installed the new springs, and probably over tightened them a bit, and I also tightened up the header-midpipe bolts. Whistling sound/exhaust leak appears to have gone away as per my simple drive around the block. I'll know definitively on Monday.
Only thing now is a small resonance/vibration at extremely low RPM (1500-2000). Might be attributed to the BHR engine mounts & the fact that I torqued the springs down so there isn't much slop in that connection. Hardly an issue, because you are barely in that RPM range.

Any thoughts on this set up would be greatly appreciated! I am really thinking hard about doing this very soon.

These two are not compatible.
The BHR header replaces both the header and the midpipe, and the connection point between the two is quite far downstream from where the stock connection point is. Stick whatever catback you want on that, Borla is one of the more popular ones, so can't go wrong with it.
The BHR header
which connects past the end of the transmission it appears:
vs any other header that uses the stock connection point
and where it connects up, more next to the middle of the transmission:

Ebay RS Exhaust....
Started on fire, leaving no packing in the mufflers what so ever. Only installed for an hour and it sounds like a strait pipe.
Doesnt sound bad I guess. Kinda reminds me of my GSXR600 at mid RPM.

i have a feeling i am the only one that has tried the racing beat racing exhaust. Race Exhaust System for 04-11 RX-8 - Racing Beat great sounds and makes it sound unique compared to the other exhaust systems out on the market

If anyone has a BHR midpipe with Cobra catback I'd really love to hear the combo. I've gone through so many exhaust videos I feel like I've heard them all. I feel like the BHR mid and Cobra cat would offer the deepest, throatiest combo.
I'm also considering Corksport and Toyosport, but the above combo so far seems to be winning my heart. I'd just love to hear it if anyone has it.

Just for grins, my car with the Billy Boat (B&B) muffler and no cat filmed a few years ago. I still have it and it's holding together well. Some cracks on the tips and muffler sides, but no leaks.

Ok guys. I have a 2006 shinka with the muffler cut out. I'm thinking about getting a Megan midpipe. Does anyone have one on their car without a muffler as well? I'm wondering how loud it will be, and if I should get an aftermarket muffler to complement it, or leave it straight piped.
Thanks
Thanks

Just thought I'd throw my setup out there for fun. It's a cat back exhaust, so everything in the front end is stock so far. No midpipe. This is something of my own creation since I didn't like the sound of any of the factory made exhausts. No power improvements yet, but i'm curious to see what it'll do once i remove the cat, etc. But I also did it for some significant weight reduction. This whole exhaust from the cat flange back weighs probably 12 lbs. So enjoy and I apologize for the snow, dirt, and poor sound quality. The description explains more.

cheap exhaust, expensive sound
After seeing a video on youtube I decided to take a risk and order a catback exhaust from Xcessmotors off of ebay. Low quality but so far I absolutely love the sound. Ive been driving around just to hear it. Cost only $200 but was well worth it for that sound. When it disintegrates will probably just get another or bolt the stock exhaust back on. Hope I pass inspecition

headers
I have a Toyosports cat-back on my 8. not sure whether you have heard of it or not. its a small company based in the UK. They do the Manifold and De-Cat also. My exhaust sounds really nice. It's quite high pitched, pops and bangs all the time (this is with a cat). When i get a chance i'll take a video of it.

That header is built in Asia and generically sold to whoever wants to put their name on it. If you study the features and then search images of "RX8 header" you can find it pretty easy. This is true for most of the "cheap" headers being sold. I assume that must be why you want it because otherwise it's not that good of a manifold design. Might as well not even change from the OE manifold.
