For $700 you aint gonna get ****.

Heck, people are dumping THOUSANDS into their RX8s with marginal HP/torque increases.

For $700, there are two options;

1) Get the light flywheel for $450, and have a friend install it, or a cheap place if you have one..

2) Get a used CZ 1.1 w/ usb for $400, canscan for $140, and tweak the map to get about 40 hp.

Aside from those two, there isn't much you can do right now. Intakes and exhausts don't help much.

I agree with the nitrous argument. If you are looking at substantial increases in hp you are not going to get it for $700 unless you go nitrous. Talk to Charles Hill about that (nitrous). Otherwise the lightweight flywheel is a good suggestion. The Can Zoomer even tuned is all over the place from no hp increase to 5 hp (RX Tuner magazine) to 25 hp for some people.

40HP for $540 is a damn good upgrade. Has anyone dyno proven that 40HP or is that straight from the butt dyno?

Haven't seen anyone pull a 40 hp increase yet. From what i've the cz works well if your car dynos at lower hps like 160-170. But if your car is already dynoing ~190 you won't see much improvement from the unit itself. Here's a reference http://www.rxtuner.com/farticles/Ca...ndExplained.pdf

An intake and catback should solve your torque deficiencies..... no, not really.
At least it'll make your 8 sound like its got the testicular fortitude.

Focus taking weight off the crank. The light weight fly wheel would be a good start, then do the aluminum underdrive pulley set-up.......Rotary God posted HP estimated upgrades and said that the Flywheel will feel like 20HP freed up and the underdrive pulley set would be 10 HP freed up. Check out my post about light wieght flywheel. I just procured a Racing Beat one and also bought the Power Pulley set from SR Motorsport. The power pulley set should be pretty simple to install yourself also.

By the way, some people are going to knock underdrive pulleys, but I don't think any of them have actually installed/owned one before....they are just putting out domestic consumption. My underdrive pulley has been great on my 300zx.

I can attest to the fact that the installation of the mods mentioned above will drop about a full second off of your 1/4 mile e.t.'s before any ECU mods. That comes with a gain of about 10 mph, as well. 55 h.p. of nitrous provides another drop of about a full second and gain of another 10 mph. It should be noted that I disagree with those who feel that most mods are not worth the money. I don't think ANY engine without a camshaft has one bolt-on mod that will provide dramatic changes in power. Therefore, we must look at modifying the rotary as a project that requires several small mods that add up to big gains.

At this point I have about $4K in mods, with labor provided by yours truly, and the gains are somewhat remarkable. The money spent is worth wiping the smiles off of the faces of Mustang and Camaro drivers in a drag race alone. The last thing those fools want to do is try to keep up on a road course and make me get my money's worth out of my Racing Beat suspension.

My point is that with well-placed mods the RX-8 will give you good performance per buck spent if realistic expectations are held.

Charles

p.s. I expect another drop of about .5-.7 seconds with an ECU re-map, another 20 h.p. of nitrous, and slicks.

Try reading this page: http://tyrannical.org/page-15

If you're interested, someone is selling a CZ 1.1 with usb/software in the for sale section for $375.

K&N Short Ram - Wait for the Racing Beat unit it will be better. The K&N unit has had some idling issues, and on real dynos saw loss of power at the low-mid end for power up top. Also loud
Nology wires - Do not get these. We had a poster here that got them. Not only did they not add horse power, they wound up burning up two of his sparkplugs. Their claims are nonsense.
Unorthodox Racing Pullies - Even though they are selling them, they are not out yet. The UR guy is on this board. On their website they are claiming some pretty good results without underdriving things too bad. No independent dynos out yet. You may want to look at cortc's titanium pullies coming out they sound pretty sweet, or SR Motorsports has some too.
